The protest at Ramjas College by students and teachers against Tuesday’s ‘ABVP vandalism’ turned violent after clashes broke out between the protestors and ABVP supporters.
Even though the police have said that the situation was under control after taking the disruptors to the station, not all is well in the campus.
Eyewitnesses at the scene have recounted stories of being chased by ABVP workers outside the college while some have seen their friends and fellow protestors being beaten up. Several student groups at the Ramjas hostel and around the area were also pulled out and beaten up despite not being part of the process.
A screenshot obtained by Outlook of one of the Whatsapp groups of protestors today tells a horrifying tale of students being chased near Maurice Nagar in North Campus. It says, “Large number of ABVP men just chased one boy from college. They then started chasing us, (3 girls) and screaming “azadi legi” to us.”
Several student protestors were also loaded into a bus and taken to the Mandi House police station at 7pm today. Many of them refused to get out of the bus saying that they wanted to file a case against the ABVP goons for their violent outrage on Wednesday and Tuesday. Witness accounts say that the police resisted filing such a case.
Most students were made to stay inside the college by college officials and police and were instructed to remove jewellery and other items saying that they would cause injuries if they were pulled by agitators.
While some policemen were helpful in getting students out of the campus where they were trapped for the better half of the day, verbal accounts of students suggest that several people who were only watching the protests were also rounded up to the police station.
Instances are also being recounted by students of journalists being beaten up by goons despite declaring that they were there to only cover the protests.
Several students at the protest have also said that they have been explicitly warned by officials to not talk about the incidences of violence with anyone.
