Bangladesh, who lost the first Test in Durban by 220 runs, have looked quite competitive on Day 1. They found success through left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who claimed the crucial wickets of Elgar, Petersen and Rickelton for his 3 for 77. Pacer Khaled Ahmed filled in well for injured strike bowler Taskin Ahmed by taking 2 for 59. This included the wicket of Bavuma.

12:55 PM IST: Bavuma's Wait Continues

Temba Bavuma's wait to score his second Test century continues. Bavuma's 67 at PE was his 19th Test half-century but he is yet to add to his one and only hundred, which he made six years ago. He was out for 93 in the first Test. Other South African batsmen who failed to convert their fifties into a hundred were Dean Elgar (70) and Keegan Petersen (64).

Day 1 Recap

90 overs, 278/8. Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat first. The hosts' skipper (70 off 89) then stitched a 52-run opening stand with Sarel Erwee (24 off 40). It was followed by fifties from Keegan Petersen (64 off 124) and Temba Bavuma (67 off 162). Ryan Rickelton also scored a good-looking 42 off 82. At the close of play on Day 1, Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder were unbeaten on 10 off 24 and 0 off 19.

For the visitors, Taijul Islam and Khaled Ahmed claimed 3/77 and 2/59. Mehidy Hasan, Ebadot Hossain and Najmul Hossain Shanto were the other three bowlers utilised by Mominul Haque.
