Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s first Duleep Trophy appearance was supposed to be another important step in a journey that has already moved at a ridiculous pace. Instead, the 15-year-old’s first innings lasted just six balls.
Representing East Zone and serving as Ishan Kishan’s deputy, Sooryavanshi came out swinging, hit two boundaries and then walked back for 8 off 6 balls against the North East Zone.
It was only one innings, and writing off a teenager over it would be absurd. But the dismissal did bring back a question that will follow him for a while: can his fearless style work in red-ball cricket without a few adjustments?
A Blazing Start, Then A Familiar Ending
Sooryavanshi did not take long to show his intentions. The left-hander attacked from the start and struck two consecutive boundaries in the first over he faced. But North East Zone pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam, who is almost twice Sooryvanshi's age, kept him interested and eventually got his reward.
Trying to maintain the same attacking approach, Sooryavanshi went after another delivery but could not keep the shot under control. The chance went to the fielder, ending his stay almost as quickly as it had begun.
The youngster looked disappointed as he made his way back. And understandably so. This was his first opportunity to make an impression in the Duleep Trophy, a competition where performances carry more weight than the usual age-group cricket.
But this is also where Sooryavanshi's biggest challenge lies. His aggression is his strength. It is what makes him exciting and has helped him grab attention at such a young age. Yet first-class cricket is a different game. There will be times when he has to leave good balls, respect a bowler's spell and wait before unleashing the shots everyone knows he can play.
How Long Will It Take Sooryavanshi To Make His Test Debut?
There is no rush, and there really should not be. Sooryavanshi has already shown that he belongs on big stages, but Test cricket demands a completely different kind of temperament. He will need more senior red-ball matches, longer innings and the ability to bat through difficult sessions before India can seriously consider him for the format.
His approach does not need to change completely. In fact, India should not try to take away the aggression that makes him special. What he needs is another layer to his game, better shot selection, more patience and an understanding of when to attack and when to simply survive. At 15, he has time on his side. Plenty of it. A six-ball innings in the Duleep Trophy will not define Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's future, but it could offer an early lesson.
