India’s highest sporting honour, the Khel Ratna Award, which was named after former PM Rajiv Gandhi, was renamed in the honour of hockey legend Dhyan Chand, following admirable performance of the men’s and women’s hockey teams in the Tokyo Olympics. It was India’s best haul in the Olympics—one gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant has successfully completed a five-day maiden sea voyage as the performance of the key systems of the 40,000-tonne warship was found to be satisfactory. Built at a cost of around Rs 23,000 crore, it will operate MiG-29K fighter jets, and Kamov-31 and MH-60R multi-role helicopters. It is designed for a crew of around 1,700 people.

The Supreme Court has imposed hefty fines on eight political parties—BJP, Congress, JD(U), RJD, LJP, CPI, NCP and CP(I)M—for not disclosing details of criminal cases against their candidates. The parties were held guilty of failing to comply with the court’s directions on declaring criminal antecedents of candidates during the Bihar polls.
