Tamil Nadu: Unseasonal Rain Batters State; Schools And Colleges In Nagapattinam Declare Holiday

As an unseasonal spell of rain pounded the southern state of Tamil Nadu from Wednesday night, schools and colleges in Nagapattinam were forced to declare a holiday. Schools in Tiruvarur district have also announced a holiday on Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department, a depression had formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, around 80 km away from the Sri Lankan coast and 400 km away from Tamil Nadu’s Karaikal.

 “Depression over Southwest BoB lay centred at 2330 IST about 60 km Noetheast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka) and 400 km Southeast of Karaikal (India). Very likely to move nearly west-southwest and cross Sri Lanka coast between Batticaloa and Trincomalee around the early morning of 02 Feb.”, IMD tweeted.

As per the handout of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, “Under its influence, light to moderate rain is likely at many places over south Tamilnadu and with at one or two places over north Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 02 February. Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places over south Tamilnadu on 0224 February 2023.”

The handout further stated that sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough on Thursday and Friday. Fishermen have also been issued a warning due to the rough sea conditions.
