Maharashtra: Cow Vigilantes Lynch Man To Death For Transporting Meat, 11 Arrested

Two Muslim men who were carrying meat were attacked severely by a group of 10-15 cow vigilantes in Nashik, Maharashtra. One of them died and the attackers were held based on the complaint by the other victim. Two cases of death by lynching have been reported in Nashik over the last two weeks.

A group of cow vigilantes lynched a man to death on suspicion of carrying meat in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. 

This becomes the second incident of lynching by 'gau rakshaks' or cow vigilantes in Nashik in the last two weeks. 

According to the reports, this incident took place near Gambhirwadi on Ghoti-Sinnar Road in the Igatpuri area of Nashik, located more than 150 km from Mumbai at around 5:30 pm on Saturday.

The police have informed the media that 11 people have been arrested related to this case in Ghoti jurisdiction. 

Man lynched to death in Nashik

According to the reports two men from the Kurla area in Mumbai were in a car transporting meat and on their way to the big city they were attacked by a group of 10-15 cow vigilantes who carried steel rods and wooden sticks.

The two victims identified as Afan Ansari aged 32 and Nasir Qureshi aged 24 were seriously injured in the attack. 

Reportedly the two were taken to the SMBT Hospital in the Dhamangaon area. Ansari was announced dead during his treatment and Qureshi was reportedly getting treated by the doctors.

Qureshi was able to file a complaint and based on that the Ghoti police have arrested 11 persons and a case has been registered on charges of murder, reportedly.

The reports said that the meat samples have been sent to a forensic lab for testing and further probe is underway into the case.

Other attacks by cow vigilantes

On June 8, three men transporting cattle on a tempo were attacked allegedly a group of 'cow vigilantes', police earlier said. 

The body of one of them, identified as Lukman Ansari (23), was recovered from a gorge at Ghatandevi in Igatpuri area on June 10, they said.
