A day after the brutal murder of a 16-year-old teenager in northwest Delhi's Shahbad Dairy, police have taken the 20-year-old accused Sahil in remand for two days.

Earlier, following a preliminary probe into the brutal killing of a minor girl, Delhi police revealed that the accused was enraged after his break-up with the victim and the fight between them a day earlier triggered the horrific act, police said on Monday.

A senior police officer said the accused suspected the victim of having an affair with her ex-boyfriend and had allegedly threatened her a few days ago that he would kill her.

"Initial probe also revealed that Sahil had suspicion that she had started talking to her former boyfriend and got into a relationship with him. He had also apparently threatened to kill her," he said.

"During investigation, police checked the CCTV footage of the area and spoke to the victim's family who said she was going around with a boy named Sahil. We reached his place and the boy was found absconding. Technical surveillance was mounted. We questioned his relatives and worked on all technical aspects.

"A phone by his aunt (bua) to his father informing him about Sahil's sudden arrival helped police to nab him from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. His medical examination was conducted and by Monday night, he will reach Delhi, following which police will further interrogate him," a senior police officer said.

All about the murder

A 16-year-old girl, identified as Sakshi, was stabbed over 20 times and bludgeoned to death on Sunday in a bylane in northwest Delhi's Shahbad Dairy area.

A nearly 90-second video shows the accused pinning the victim to a wall with one hand and stabbing her repeatedly. He did not stop even when the girl slumped to the ground, jabbing the knife into her over 20 times, kicking her and then slamming a cement slab on her repeatedly.

The murder was caught on camera. Several people are seen at the site but no one is seen intervening.

The accused Sahil, 20, was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district on Monday.

Sahil and Sakshi are said to have been in a relationship "relationship" and they had a quarrel on Saturday.

Sakshi had gone shopping on Sunday evening for the birthday party of her friend's child when she was accosted by Sahil in the densely populated neighbourhood, according to police.(With PTI Inputs)
