History of the 1921 Silver Dollars

The first Morgan dollars appeared in 1878 based on George T. Morgan's design. Their production aimed to create a safe market for silver mined in American mines. Even though their production was finished in 1904, the US Mint made one more attempt in 1921. It was the last year of their minting.

The first Peace dollars appeared in 1921 to celebrate the end of WWI, and their production lasted until 1935. After historian Farran Zerbe proposed this coin minting, Anthony de Francisci's design became a reality as soon as he won a competition.

Some collectors prefer 1921 PL Morgan dollars and are prepared to pay $160 to $190 for those in AU grade, while the price ranking for uncirculated pieces is $200 to $2,880. The highest quality ones in MS 66 grade cost $5,000 to $6,000.

However, specimens in the highest grades are significantly pricier, with estimated prices of approximately $2,450 to $8,500 for coins ranked MS 66. Those in MS 67 grade are even more valuable, so you can expect to pay about $22,500 to $35,000 per one.

Best-ranked Peace dollars on the Sheldon scale cost significantly more. For instance, those in MS 64 grade cost $1,300 to $1,650, while you should count on about $96,000 to $135,000 for scarce coins with MS 67 ranking.
