Rangotsav: Reimagining Mathura And Braj Bhoomi’s Vibrant Spirit

A remarkable cultural and spiritual renaissance is taking place in the state of Uttar Pradesh. By blending ancient traditions with modern development, Uttar Pradesh is creating world-class experiences for millions of pilgrims and global visitors. The sacred land of Mathura and the wider Braj region is at the heart of this vibrant transformation. With the grand celebration of Rangotsav, the timeless cultural heritage of Braj Bhoomi is reaching a wider global audience under the state’s visionary 'Utsav Pradesh' initiative.

The Vision of 'Utsav Pradesh'

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took charge in 2017 with a clear goal of establishing Uttar Pradesh as an 'Utsav Pradesh'. This ambitious vision aligns closely with the broader nation-building goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The objectives of ‘Utsav Pradesh’ extend far beyond simply hosting traditional festivals of the state. It also reconnects people with their rich cultural identity. Additionally, it restores pride in their spiritual roots and opens new avenues for economic enterprise, local employment, and tourism.

Rangotsav: A Living Tradition Celebrated at Scale

In the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, Holi is not just a single-day festival; it is a deep-rooted, living tradition that spans weeks starting with Basant Panchami and culminating with Rang Panchami. In Braj Bhoomi’s towns like Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Dauji, Rangotsav brings these sacred celebrations together into a grand cultural showcase:

  • Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon: A unique ancient ritual with sticks and shields that draws thousands of devotees to experience its vibrant devotional energy.

  • Phoolon ki Holi in Vrindavan: A flower-petal celebration that highlights the gentle, joyful, and spiritual devotion of the region.

  • Unprecedented Gathering: In 2026, more than 44 lakh visitors participated in the Rangotsav festivities across the Braj region, demonstrating the huge appeal of this traditional spectacle of colours.

Transforming Mathura and the Braj Landscape

To accommodate the growing influx of devotees and travellers, Uttar Pradesh is carrying out large-scale infrastructure upgrades and urban renewal projects throughout Mathura and neighbouring towns:

  • Corridor Developments: The Barsana–Govardhan–Radhakund corridor is going to improve access for pilgrims and travellers. Also, the proposed Shri Banke Bihari corridor in Vrindavan aims to streamline crowd management and enhance amenities near the sacred temple precinct.

  • Upgraded Infrastructure: The region's parikrama paths are witnessing extensive work of renovation. Restoration of river ghats, construction of modern parking facilities and decorative entry gates are taking place throughout the region.

  • Cleaner and Safer Spaces: Improved facilities ensure that pilgrims can perform their sacred circumambulations with greater safety, convenience, and comfort.

Driving the Vision of a Global Tourism Hub

The success of Rangotsav in Mathura and Braj reflects a broader rise in Uttar Pradesh’s tourism industry. Driven by the landmark Uttar Pradesh Tourism Policy 2022, the state is rapidly strengthening its position as the country’s global tourism hub.

A Future Rooted in Living Heritage

By giving age-old traditions a dynamic new platform, Mathura shows how spiritual heritage can thrive alongside modern progress. Rangotsav has evolved into a global spectacle where every colour tells a story, every street celebrates faith, and every devotee becomes part of Uttar Pradesh's historic journey toward shared prosperity.
