World Swimming Championships: Wellbrock, Johnson Win Open Water Gold As Action Begins After Delays In Singapore

After two delays due to water-quality issues at Singapore's Sentosa coast, the open water events at the World Swimming Championships 2025 finally began on Wednesday. Germany’s Florian Wellbrock claimed gold in the men’s 10km race, clocking 1:59:55.50, ahead of Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri and Australia’s Kyle Lee. In the women’s event, Australia’s Moesha Johnson won in 2:07:51.30, edging out Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci and Monaco’s Lisa Pou. The postponement followed concerns over E. coli levels, which later showed significant improvement. Additional open water races are scheduled through Sunday, while pool events begin on July 27. Water polo is already underway at an indoor venue.
