Daniil Medvedev continued his quest for a first ATP title since 2023 after easing into the Washington Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Yibing Wu.

Medvedev, who will take on lucky loser Corentin Moutet for a place in the final four, cruised to a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory in just one hour and 10 minutes on Thursday.

The Russian, who is competing as the world number 14 this week, his lowest ranking since May 2019, opened the match with a break of serve which set the tone for his win.

Despite Wu putting up a spirited showing to keep pace with his opponent, Medvedev broke again in the final game of the first set to take the lead.

Medvedev then missed five break opportunities in a pulsating second game of the second set, but he overcame those missed opportunities to get the better of Wu's serve soon after.

And he sealed his progression at the second attempt against the serve, but seventh seed Alex De Minaur had a more difficult task to reach the last eight later in the day.

De Minaur steadied himself after a second-set comeback from Jiri Lehecka to earn a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 victory in a two-hour epic.

The players traded tie-break victories in the first two sets, with Lehecka saving two match points in the second of those to take the encounter the distance.

But De Minaur was able to regain his composure to see out the victory, breaking Lehecka in the fifth and seventh games before holding serve to clinch the victory.

The Australian will face home hope Brandon Nakashima in the next round, after his triumph over Wimbledon quarter-finalist Cameron Norrie.

Data Debrief: Hard-court Medvedev finds his form

Having reached the showpiece match of this competition in 2019, Medvedev will have confidence of going all the way after reaching his third quarter-final in Washington.

Indeed, he has now reached the final eight of a tournament eight times in 2025. Only Carlos Alcaraz (10) has managed to do so on more occasions.

Against Wu, the eighth seed fired 11 aces and won 93% (28/30) of his first-serve points, improving to 2-0 against his opponent in their head-to-head meetings.
