Moise Kouame, a 17-year-old wildcard entrant, has vanquished former US Open champion Marin Cilic to become the youngest to make the Roland Garros second round since 1992, and also the youngest Frenchman to win a match at the clay court Grand Slam since 1980. Kouame beats Cilic 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-1 to loud cheers at Court Simonne Mathieu!
The preceding match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen is a riveting one, between men’s sixth seed Daniil Medvedev and Australia’s Adam Walton. The duo is locked in a gruelling five-set battle with the fifth and final one currently level at 4-4. The Siegemund vs Osaka match is up next after this.
Osaka makes her appearance at Roland-Garros in a sparkling black and gold outfit. She performs the pre-match formalities and the warm-up routine with 39-year-old Siegemund. It's Osaka who serves the ball to get the first-round clash underway.
Five straight holds for Osaka as the Japanese star gets ahead once more in what has been a really tight first set. Briliant work by Siegemund, who is 38 years old, to go toe-to-toe against Osaka, who has never been at her best on clay.
Osaka, despite being far from her best, still manages to pile up the winners and runs away with the first set. Just one more set before she moves to the second round.
An admirable comeback being mounted by Siegemund, but Osaka uses her lightning quick reflexes to save a break point and tie the scores three-all in the second set.
This second set is absolutely thrilling for a first-round clash, and we are going into a tiebreaker game. Siegemund is simply refusing to give up in front of a rejuvinated Osaka.
Osaaka clinches the second set tiebreaker, and the Japanese star will go down into the books as a straight-set winner. However, it was certainly not an easy win, wiht Siegemund pushing her until the very end.
