Match 8 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 witnessed a rare feat when Pakistan successfully chased down a target of 345 runs comfortably with 10 balls to spare. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and young batter Abdullah Shafique added 176 runs for the third wicket and also scored individual centuries to make it happen for Pakistan. Highest target successfully chased in World Cups

Sri Lanka's total of 344 for nine was easily chased down by Pakistan in Tuesday's encounter. It is the highest successful run chase in ODI World Cup history. The previous record belonged to Ireland, who chased down a 329-run target set by England in the 2011 World Cup in Bangalore. Ireland's chase was marked by Kevin O'Brien's 50-ball century, which was then the fastest in the ODI World Cups. South Africa's Aiden Markram set a new record, in 49 balls, coincidentally against Sri Lanka in Delhi on Saturday (October 7).

This is also the second-highest successful chase for Pakistan in ODIs and the highest by any team against Sri Lanka in ODIs.

Highest score by a Pakistan wicket-keeper in ODIs

Mohammad Rizwan's unbeaten knock of 131 runs in 121 balls made him the player of the match against Sri Lanka. It was the highest score by a Pakistan wicketkeeper in ODIs. Earlier, the record was under Kamran Akmal's name who made 124 runs in 2005 against West Indies.

2nd Highest scores for Pakistan in ODI World Cups

Mohammad Rizwan's unbeaten knock of 131 off 121 balls is also the second-highest individual score by a Pakistani player in ODI World Cups. Imran Nazir's 160 against Zimbabwe in Kingston at the 2007 World Cup is still at the top.

Most wins against a team without any loss in WC

In nine ODI World Cup meetings so far, Pakistan have defeated Sri Lanka eight times -- by 192 runs in 1975; by 15 runs and 113 runs in 1987; by 50 runs and 11 runs in 1983; by four wickets in 1992; by 11 runs in 2011. One match, in the 2019 edition, was abandoned. 

Most hundreds scored in an ODI match

Match 8 of the ICC Cricket World Cup saw an exhibition of batting with four centurions -- Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama for Sri Lanka, and Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique for Pakistan -- creating a tournament first. This is the most hundreds scored in a World Cup match and joint-most in an ODI match. In 1998, Pakistan's Ijaz Ahmed and Mohammad Yousuf, and Australia's Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting hit centuries in an ODI match. The feat was replicated by Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli (for India) and George Bailey and Shane Watson (for Australia) in 2013.
