The Indian wheelchair racer lined up in the Men’s 1500m T54 Final, the category for athletes with lower-limb impairments, hoping to continue his rapid rise in wheelchair racing after switching from wheelchair basketball.
Ramesh made a solid start and stayed tucked in with the lead pack through the opening laps, hovering around sixth place before slipping to seventh at the halfway mark. When the bell rang for the final lap, he was still in touch with the group, but the race exploded in the closing stages as the front-runners surged away.
Shanmugam simply had no response to that late burst. He dropped further back over the final 400m and crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 3:23.59, ending his Commonwealth Games final outside the medal positions.
