Neeraj Chopra’s night in Doha comes to an end with a foul on his fifth attempt. The Indian star was unable to improve on his 85.69m mark and remains in fourth place on the leaderboard.
With only the top three throwers moving into the sixth and final round, Chopra misses out on the last throw. Still, it was a positive return to competition after his back injury, as he managed to find his rhythm and cross the 85m mark in his season opener.
Four rounds are done in Doha and the leaderboard has a new name at the top! Rumesh Pathirage has delivered the biggest throw of the night so far, leading the field with a stunning 88.68m effort.
Anderson Peters remains in second with 86.38m, while Curtis Thompson’s early statement throw of 85.99m keeps him in third. Neeraj Chopra is currently sitting fourth with 85.69m after finding his rhythm with that big third-round effort.
Behind them, Artur Felfner (83.62m) and Julius Yego (82.22m) complete the top six, while Walcott, Vadlejch, and Ahmed Hussein continue their fight to climb higher as the final rounds approach.
Neeraj Chopra is back on the runway for his fourth throw, but this one doesn’t quite match the spark of his previous effort. The Indian star sends the javelin out to 83.45m, a solid attempt, though well below his third-round mark of 85.69m.
He remains in the hunt, but the big throws are still waiting to come as the battle for the top spots continues in Doha.

Neeraj Chopra is warming up in Doha! After a couple of cautious throws, the Indian star finally gets the rhythm flowing in his third attempt. He charges down the runway, times the release beautifully, and sends the javelin soaring out to 85.69m.
That’s a big jump from his earlier effort and a sign that the champion’s trademark power is starting to come through. The golden arm is finding its groove, and the competition just got more interesting.
Neeraj Chopra is on the board! After the opening foul, the Indian star finds his first legal throw of the night, sending the javelin out to 82.77m. A steady start as Chopra begins to settle into the competition.
But Anderson Peters has just turned up the heat! The two-time world champion produces a brilliant 86.38m throw and jumps straight into the lead. That is the kind of response expected from a big-stage performer.

Curtis Thompson explodes into the lead with a massive opening statement in Doha! The US athlete comes in with a strong, controlled run-up and launches it out to 85.99m, immediately setting the standard and taking charge of the competition.
That throw puts him comfortably at the top right now.
Behind him, Anderson Peters sits in second with 82.82m, while the rest of the field will now be under pressure to respond early in this men’s javelin contest.
Men’s javelin throw is underway in Doha and it already has a bit of rhythm to it. Keshorn Walcott opens things up with a solid first effort, landing at 81.70m, clean, measured, and right into competition mode.
Neeraj Chopra follows, and there’s instant attention as he steps in. But it doesn’t quite come off, a foul on his opening attempt. A cautious start from the Indian star as he looks to find his timing after the long injury break.
Neeraj Chopra’s last competitive outing came at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo on September 18, where he finished eighth in the men’s javelin final with a best throw of 84.02m. The performance was clearly affected by back issues he was carrying at the time, which disrupted his rhythm and limited his usual range on the field.
The 2026 Diamond League season continues with its seventh stop in Doha, Qatar, on Friday, 19 June, as the men’s javelin throw takes centre stage. All eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra as he begins his season at the Qatar Sports Club, returning to competition after recovering from a back injury.
This marks his fourth straight appearance in Doha, a venue where he has enjoyed strong results, including victory in 2023 and a national record throw of 90.23m in 2025, when he finished second. It is also his first outing since the World Athletics Championships 2025, making it an important step in rebuilding rhythm and form ahead of a busy season featuring the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
He faces a strong international field featuring Rumesh Pathirage, Keshorn Walcott, Anderson Peters, Julius Yego, Curtis Thompson, and Jakub Vadlejch.
