The Sunday Miami Grand has been brought forward by three hours to 1:00 PM Local (10:30 IST) to prevent the event from getting botched due to potential thunderstorms in the area.
The decision was taken by the commercial rights holders F1 and governing body FIA after deliberations with the local authorities. The previous two grand prix, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, were cancelled due to war in the Middle East, which also pushed the decision of taking a proactive call to save Miami Grand Prix 2026 from meeting the same fate as the previous two.
"the weather forecast (predicts) heavier rainstorms later in the afternoon close to the original planned race start time" the statement from F1 and FIA read.
This decision has been taken to ensure the least amount of disruption to the race and to ensure the maximum possible window to complete the grand prix in the best conditions and to prioritise the safety of drivers, fans, teams, and staff," the statement further added.
The primary motive is to do away with the race before the weather gets worst, which is predicted to be around 3:00 PM local, one hour before the original start time. It's predicted that one it starts raining heavily, then it won't stop before hours and carrying out the race at the original start would mean that the race may not run.
The local laws of the US state that race could be suspended if there is a threat of lightning to strike in or around the circuit, and in such a case, shelter-in-place procedures have been put in place for teams. Despite postponing the race, the conditions could still be wet, though it's hoped that it'll be acceptable for racing.
The drivers are yet to come across wet conditions since the tectonic changes in engine designs were introduced this year, starting in Australia. The new cars have already proved to be a challenge in dry conditions, and if there are wet conditions during the main race, then it will again be a new territory for the drivers.
The massive amount of electrical power available in the new engines, and the issues teams have been having deploying it in a predictable manner, threaten "a bit more chaos," says current world champion Norris to BBC.
"I don't know how wet it's going to be," said Norris, who qualified fourth behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. "It's going to be a big challenge on race day for everyone to perform, find the limit.
"Obviously, you can't afford to make any mistakes. We're thrown in the deep end, but that's what we're here to do. I look forward to it," he adds further.
