Scotland 2-0 Belarus (2025)
The action kicks off at Hampden Park! Scotland know only three points will keep their World Cup hopes alive this afternoon.
Scotland show their first real threat as Robertson delivers a tempting ball from deep, but no one is there to finish. At the other end, Pechenin causes problems down the left with a smart flick, but Scotland deal with it calmly.
Zabelin rises unchallenged and directs a clean header onto the roof of the net, too easy from a Scottish perspective. It's been a sluggish start from the hosts, lacking urgency and bite.
Che Adams thought he’d broken the deadlock with a brilliant left-footed finish, but the flag was raised for offside. However, after a quick VAR check, the referee puts his finger to his ear and awards the goal, Adams was onside after all! He expertly controlled McTominay’s pass before drilling the ball into the bottom-left corner. Scotland haven’t played their best yet, but none of that matters now, they’ve taken the lead!
Scotland’s start may have been shaky, but that opener changes everything, the focus now shifts to piling on the goals. Belarus have already leaked 14 goals in qualifying, and with goal difference likely to be key in this tight group, their vulnerable defense could seriously hurt their chances moving forward.
Despite Adams’ opener deflating them, Belarus are still managing to penetrate Scotland’s final third with relative ease. Malashevich finds space and lets fly from distance, but his effort sails harmlessly over the bar. Moments later, Belarus create another chance in the box, forcing Gunn into a straightforward save. No real danger so far, but Belarus haven’t given up their early fight just yet.
CHANCE for Scotland! A sloppy Belarus giveaway lets Robertson, McTominay, and McGinn link up to set up Adams inside the box. He gets a shot away but fires it high and wide under pressure. Adams appeals for a penalty, but after a quick VAR review, the referee waves play on, no foul.
Scotland still lead 1-0 as Gannon-Doak is brought down harshly by Yablonskiy and looks to be in pain. Thankfully, he recovers quickly and is back on his feet. Play resumes without delay.
Gannon-Doak bursts past his marker from halfway, driving forward with pace and determination. With Adams unmarked nearby, he opts to take on the shot himself, but Lapoukhov reacts brilliantly to tip it around the post. A moment of individual brilliance almost doubles Scotland’s lead!
Gannon-Doak shows brilliant skill again, weaving into space and charging at the box. His shot is blocked but bounces right into the hands of a hesitant Belarus goalkeeper. Every time he’s involved, you feel something’s about to happen, just needs that final touch. And that’s halftime here at Hampden Park, with Scotland holding a 1-0 lead.
Both sets of players are out on the pitch, and the second half is underway with Scotland still leaidng 1-0. Will we see another fast start like we saw in the first half? Stay tuned!
Bizarre moment as McGinn slides a pass through for Che Adams and the Belarus defence completely switch off, expecting it to roll out. It doesn’t, Adams chases it down and whips a ball across the face of goal, but there’s no one there to finish. A strange lapse at the back from Belarus.
Nervy moment for Belarus! Lapoukov rushes out of his box to deal with a long ball and almost misjudges it, but just about recovers and launches a counter. Belarus move it quickly upfield and look to test Scotland, but the shot is deflected, Gunn reacts well to keep it in and deny even a corner. End-to-end stuff for a moment!
INCREDIBLE DRAMA at Hampden! Just moments after Scotland were denied a penalty following a VAR check, Belarus go straight up the other end and equalise! The referee had initially waved away the foul on McTominay, but after a trip to the monitor, he reverses the decision, penalty to Scotland? No! In the chaos, Belarus break and punish the lapse. From VAR despair to delirium for the visitors. Scotland stunned, and Hampden silenced in seconds.
What a twist! After reviewing the play on the monitor, the referee rules that McTominay was fouled, but despite Belarus’s quick counter, their goal is denied after a VAR check for offside. VAR has been the real game-changer here at Hampden Park, saving Scotland from conceding and keeping the tension sky-high!
Adams finds the back of the net once more, and the crowd erupts, only for the linesman’s flag to go up immediately! Was he offside? Or did the ball come off his arm? Adams looks frustrated, hands on his head, clearly aware something’s not right. Meanwhile, VAR steps in again to review the moment
Another nail-biter for Scotland as a Belarus player beats the defenders and charges into the box, going down under Souttar’s challenge. The referee waves away the penalty appeals, but Belarus are clearly growing in confidence, pressing deeper into Gunn’s territory.
That’s it! McTominay calmly slots the ball past Lapoukhov on the half-volley, and though his celebrations are muted, this goal should seal a hard-fought win for Scotland. After a tense and tricky night at Hampden, those three points feel well-earned as the home crowd breathes a sigh of relief.
Double substitution for Scotland! Miller and Dykes come on to replace Gilmour and Adams as the home side look to freshen things up and hold on to their lead.
Belarus try to break once again, but Ebong’s shot inside the box takes a wicked deflection and goes flying off target. Gunn raises his arms in disbelief as the ball sails out, was he really appealing for a goal kick?
Belarus finally find the breakthrough! Kuchko beats Robertson to the ball and calmly slots it home, giving the visitors a lifeline late in the game. But with time running out fast, it’s a race against the clock, can Belarus pull off a remarkable comeback, or will Scotland hold on for the win?
What a nervy finish at Hampden Park! The home crowd lets out a big collective sigh of relief as Scotland cling on for a hard-fought win. It was far from straightforward, with Belarus pushing right until the final whistle, but in the end, the hosts take all three points in a thrilling World Cup qualifier.
