There is rising tension between the Real Madrid players and the coaching staff, according to several reports. After Los Blancos' recent 2-0 loss against Celta Vigo in La Liga, the situation became even more tense.
Several reports have also claimed that head coach Xabi Alonso's position is under the scanner. An emergency meeting was held between the club hierarchy, where it was reportedly decided that if Madrid lose to City, then Alonso will be fired.
"All the knockout games [vs Real Madrid] have been tight, good games. We have important players right now for the first time at the Bernabeu. We are a little bit in transition.
The biggest players that make a legacy for a decade - Kevin De Bruyne, (Kyle) Walker, (Ilkay) Gundogan, (John) Stones - are not here. Many are new, they have to experience that." - Guardiola said during the pre-match press conference.
This fixture marks the 15th time these two giants have met since 2012-13, making it the most-played fixture in the Champions League in this period.
Real Madrid's preparation for City was chaotic. They were stunned 2-0 by Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Sunday, ending an 11-match home winning streak.
Tonight, Real Madrid aims to extend their remarkable home scoring record in the UCL to 39 consecutive matches. Only two streaks—one by Juventus and one by Real Madrid themselves—have ever been longer in the competition's history.
The last time any team kept a clean sheet at the Santiago Bernabeu were CSKA Moscow, who stole a point after a goalless draw. Interestingly, Manchester City haven't won any of their last 4 games away to Real Madrid, who defeated them twice in the 2024-25 season (2-3 & 3-1).
Vini Jr has been brought down by Matheus Nunes, centimetres outside the Manchester City box and the referee has awarded a free-kick to Real Madrid from a very dangerous position. And it goes away for a corner kick, threat averted for the Cityzens.
It hasn't been a proper back and forth between the two teams as Real Madrid have had the upper edge in these opening minutes. The Los Blancos have made several progressions to the City box already.
The visitors have been able to get the ball to the Madrid box only twice.
Manchester City are settling down slowly, but they will have to look after the miss passes as Real are more than capable of taking advantage of those situations. For City, Jeremy Doku has made some positive movements inside the Madrid box.
Another free-kick for Real Madrid and Rodrygo's cross, which was met by Antonio Rudiger's header, sees the ball fly away for a goal kick.
Rodrygo's delivery did not meet any Real Madrid shirt, but they are working the ball well to break the deadlock. Manchester City are holding on to their shape
Death, taxes and Rodrygo scoring against City, these are the three constants in life.
That was too quick from Rodrygo. Brilliant hit by the Brazilian. The winger runs down the right after receiving the ball from Jude Bellingham, who was fed by Carreras from the left channel.
Rodrygo did not lose his pace after getting the ball and he ran forward to find the bottom far corner, beating the giant Donnarumma completely. It's the 5th time the Brazilian winger has scored in this fixture.
Manchester City equalize in just 7 minutes as left-back Nico O'Reily scores through an easy tap-in. City won a corner kick and the delivery was headed in by Nunes, whose attempt was saved by Curtois, but the rebound ball fell right in front of O'Reily, who just pinged the ball inside.
There's a potential penalty check. Rudiger pushed and fell on top of Erling Haaland, who appealed right away and the referee is having a look himself.
Rudiger sees yellow and Erling Haaland with a great opportunity to put City 2-1 ahead. And he does! The Norwegian completes the turnaround. It's his first goal at the Santiago Bernabeu and 6th of the Champions League season. The Cityzens have turned it all around within 15 minutes.
Thibaut Curtois made double saves moments after conceding the second goal through a penalty. Erling Haaland's darting shot was saved and so was Cherki's right-footed attempt.
3 minutes have been added on.
Brilliant turnaround by the Cityzens, who found themselves trailing in the 28th minute, but they responded in some fashion after that. Nico O'Reily tapped in from a corner kick 7 minutes later and Erling Haaland converted a penalty, 3 minutes before the half-time whistle.
Real Madrid get us underway for the 2nd half of this electrifying fixture. City might have a 1-goal cushion but as the saying goes, the last 45 minutes are too long at the Bernebeu and the Cityzens know it very well. Plenty more work to do for Man City, who can potentially score more.
Great work rate shown by Carreras there as he moved past a couple of City players to move the ball forward to Vini Jr, who laid it on for Jude Bellingham, but the Englishman misses by a mile. The action is going back and forth now.
It's all Manchester City at the moment as they search for the 3rd goal. They have made some fantastic progressions ahead, but have been unlucky to get the 3rd goal. Rayan Cherki was close to finding Haaland, in fact, the Frenchman was close to scoring himself. Then Jeremy Doku fired in a shot but it took a deflection off Curtois' right hand.
City make triple changes with 20 minutes left on the clock. Tijjani Reijnders, Omar Marmoush and Savinho on for Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki.
Endrick comes on for Raul Asencio as Real Madrid search for the equalizer more than anything at the moment. City have defended cautiously, but they have to continue to work harder in the backline or score another to see off the Los Blancos in these closing minutes.
Ouff! City were close to concede there hadn't Endrick's header gone past the cross bar. The visitors, who are defending deep at the moment, had so many chances to net their 3rd goal, but all of their attempts were either saved or hit the woodwork. Final few minutes remaining in the match.
Manchester City can breathe freely again, they can take a lot of pride from this performance. It was by far their best outing in the UEFA Champions League as their inconsistent defence fired in all cylinders today.

Manchester City leapfrog several clubs to go up to the 4th spot in the points table. They now have 13 points to their name. As for Real Madrid they remain 7th with 12 points.
Thanks for joining us folks. Hope you had a good time, see you on matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League. Goodbye for now.
