Storm Clears, Mexico Shine: El Tri Beat Ecuador For First Knockout Win In Four Decades

Mexico Vs Ecuador Match Gallery, FIFA World Cup 2026: Co-hosts El Tri advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Ecuador 2-0 at Mexico City Stadium on Tuesday (June 30). The high-stakes Round of 32 clash faced a one-hour delay due to a heavy thunderstorm and dangerous lightning overhead. Once action commenced, Mexico adjusted quickly to the slick conditions and broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute through Julian Quinones, who capitalised on a defensive mistake. They doubled the lead in the 31st minute when veteran forward Raul Jimenez found the back of the net. Ecuador pushed men forward but struggled to penetrate Mexico's resolute backline. La Tri's frustrations boiled over deep into stoppage time when Piero Hincapie received a straight red card following a VAR review for covering his mouth in a confrontational situation.
