We’re only a couple of minutes away from kick-off now in Tokyo, and there’s a real buzz inside the stadium. Both teams have just wrapped up their final warm-ups, the anthems are done
Bright start here as Brazil take control early, zipping the ball around confidently before Luiz Henrique flashes some flair with a slick step-over down the right to trouble the Japan defence. But the hosts bite back with aggressive pressing, forcing the Brazilian backline into rushed passes. Takefusa Kubo snaps in to win possession high up the pitch, raising the noise inside the stadium, but he’s quickly shut down by a wall of yellow shirts. Lively tempo already!
First real chance of the night! A sloppy clearance from Tsuyoshi Watanabe lands straight at Gabriel Martinelli’s feet and the Arsenal winger explodes into the box. He drives in from the right and whips a curling effort across goal, but it skims past the far post. Brazil getting closer!
Japan growing into this nicely! Daichi Kamada flies in with a superb sliding challenge on the edge of the Brazil box to win it cleanly, and Kaishu Sano wastes no time unleashing a rocket. It takes a wicked deflection, looping dangerously in the air, but luckily for Brazil it drops safely into Hugo Souza’s gloves. A warning for the Selecão!
Brazil carve Japan open from a quick throw as Vini Jr slips a clever reverse ball to Martinelli, who keeps it in on the by-line, but Kion Suzuki dives to cut out the low cross. Seconds later Japan explode forward – Ritsu Doan dances past his man and Kubo flashes it across goal, where Ayase Ueda stretches but pokes it inches wide from close range! Massive chance wasted!
Paulo Henrique! Out of nowhere, Brazil strike with pure class. Slick one-touch play at the edge of the box unlocks the defence and Paulo Henrique darts through before guiding a stunning first-time finish past Kion Suzuki with the outside of his boot. Ice-cold, ruthless, world-class—Brazil draw first blood in Tokyo!
Gabriel Martinelli with a rocket! A moment of Brazilian brilliance as slick one-touch passing slices through Japan’s defence, and a gorgeous chipped ball over the top finds Martinelli in stride, he doesn’t hesitate, smashing a left-footed half-volley into the far corner with venom! Suzuki had no chance. Two shots, two goals, Brazil are on fire!
Japan are pushing forward with more purpose now, getting bodies into Brazil’s final third, but they just can’t break through the disciplined Brazilian defence. Daichi Kamada looks increasingly frustrated as another attempted through-ball is easily intercepted, the yellow wall holding firm. Meanwhile, replays show that stunning Paulo Henrique opener, a classy outside-of-the-foot finish that left Suzuki rooted. Brazil have barely needed chances, but they’ve made theirs count in style.
Japan need to buckle up now!
The scoreboard may favor Brazil, but the heart of this match is beating in the stands! The Japanese fans haven’t let up for a second, singing, chanting, and drumming with incredible passion. It’s a cracking atmosphere, driving their team forward as they search for a way back. They can't disappoint this crowd.
A ruthless half from Brazil. Paulo Henrique lit it up with an outrageous outside-of-the-foot finish that left Suzuki helpless, and just minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli lashed in a vicious half-volley after a slick chipped pass opened Japan up.
Japan haven’t been passengers, they’ve shown energy and ambition, backed by a tireless home crowd, but every time they sniff the box, Brazil shut the door. It’s been calculated, clinical, and just a little bit cruel from the five-time champions.
For those who don't know, both Brazil and Japan have already secured their spots for next summer’s World Cup, having confirmed qualification well ahead of the final rounds.
Both sets of players are out on the pitch, and the second half is underway with Brazil leading 2-0. Will we see another fast start like we saw in the first half? Stay tuned!
Japan have come out firing in the second half! Ritsu Doan, full of energy, twists and turns through the Brazilian defence before delivering a dangerous low cross into the box. Takumi Minamino lashes a fierce shot toward goal, but a solid Brazilian block denies him. The rebound falls to Takefusa Kubo, who quickly fires off another effort, again, brilliantly blocked by a stretched Brazilian defender. Japan are definitely closing in and ramping up the pressure!
Japan are right back in this! After a bright start to the second half, they finally crack the Brazilian defence. A disastrous moment at the back, Fabricio Bruno’s heavy touch and slip gift the ball straight to Minamino, who stays cool under pressure and drills a powerful shot past Hugo Souza.
The crowd erupts! Brazil’s cushion is gone, and this game has suddenly burst back to life. Game on!
Brazil bring fresh firepower onto the pitch with a triple substitution! Joelinton from Newcastle, Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha, and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo come on, injecting pace and creativity. They replace Bruno Guimarães, goal-scorer Gabriel Martinelli, and Vinicius Jr, all of whom have put in solid shifts.
Unbelievable stuff! Japan are back on level terms after a sensational second-half fightback. The ball is swung in from the right, whipping across the box, and Nakamura lashes a fierce shot, Brazilian defender Fabricio Bruno wildly misjudges it and deflects it into his own net! It’s officially credited to Nakamura, but Bruno’s error is glaring, especially after his earlier mistake. Regardless, Japan roar with joy, their unbeaten home streak lives on, and the match is wide open once again! What a turnaround!
What a moment for Brazil, their best chance of the second half so far! Luiz Henrique thought he’d put the ball in the net, but it’s ruled out for offside. Undeterred, Rodrygo slips a perfect pass to Joelinton, who breaks free and races toward goal. But under pressure from a defender, his shot flies wildly off target. A golden opportunity gone begging for Brazil, they’ll need to be sharper if they want to turn this around!
Unbelievable scenes in Tokyo! Japan have turned it around!
From 2-0 down to 3-2 up, and it’s Ayase Ueda who completes the comeback! A well-delivered corner from Junya Ito finds Ueda rising above his marker to power a close-range header on target. It’s straight at Hugo Souza, but the keeper can’t sort his hands out in time and fumbles it into his own net! The stadium erupts, Japan lead Brazil, and the roof has come off this place!
Brazil are far from done here! They win a corner and swing it in dangerously, but Kion Suzuki rises bravely to punch it clear under pressure. The ball falls to Richarlison on the edge of the box, and he wastes no time unleashing a powerful follow-up, but it whistles wide of the post. A let-off for Japan, who are hanging on as Brazil ramp up the pressure!
Brazil are swarming forward now, flooding the Japan box with crosses in search of an equalizer. The pressure is relentless, but Japan’s defence is standing tall, compact, disciplined, and refusing to fold. Fresh legs enter the fray as Koki Ogawa and Henry Mochizuki replace Ritsu Doan (who picked up a yellow earlier) and Daichi Kamada.
Brazil are throwing everything forward as time ticks away. The dark blue wall holds firm as we head into six minutes of injury time, it’s absolute tension in Tokyo!
Mochizuki bursts forward on a quick counter down the right, but Joelinton’s pace and positioning halt him cold, no easy run there! Brazil almost level immediately after as Matheus Cunha races to the byline and whips in a teasing cross for Richarlison. But the forward can’t connect cleanly, and his header sails harmlessly over the bar. A golden chance missed, Brazil must be sharper if they want to force extra time!
Japan are packed deep and just about a minute left now, defending with everything they’ve got. The roar from Ajinomoto Stadium is deafening, the crowd knows something special is on the brink. Joelinton tries a quick flicked shot from the edge of the box, but Suzuki’s right there, catching it comfortably before dropping to his knees to run down the clock. T
What an incredible finish to this thrilling encounter! Japan hold on against relentless pressure to secure a famous 3-2 victory over Brazil. After coming from two goals down, they showed unbelievable resilience and spirit
Japan’s home fortress just got even stronger! With tonight’s win, they’ve extended their unbeaten streak on home soil to an impressive 21 games. The last time they lost at home was back in March 2023 against Colombia, since then, they’ve been virtually unstoppable in front of their own fans.
