After a dominant 13-0 win over Mongolia in their opening game, the Indian senior women’s team is set to face Timor Leste in their second Group B fixture of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
The match is scheduled for Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Chiang Mai Stadium, Thailand, kicking off at 14:30 IST.
India currently sit third in Group B with three points, trailing group leaders Iraq (4 points) and second-placed Thailand (also on 3 points but ahead on goal difference). Iraq have played two matches—a 5-2 win over Mongolia followed by a goalless draw with Timor Leste—while India and Thailand have each played one, registering big wins over Mongolia and Timor Leste, respectively.
Despite Timor Leste’s lower FIFA ranking (158th compared to India’s 70th), head coach Crispin Chettri is not taking the Southeast Asian side lightly. "They’re better organised than Mongolia, and even defensively stronger than Iraq," Chettri noted. "They have pace and can hold the ball well in certain phases. Their counter-attacking style is something we’ll need to watch out for."
Timor-Leste may not be traditional heavyweights, but they’ve shown steady progress. Coached by Indonesia’s Emral bin Bustamam, they recently secured their first-ever point in an AFC competition with a 0-0 draw against Iraq.
They also finished fourth in the 2024 AFF Women’s Cup, drawing against Laos and Singapore. While their historic 2-1 win over Singapore in 2019 remains their only official victory, their recent performances suggest they are capable of making life difficult for more established teams.
