The players are out on the pitch, and the teams take their position. The referee blows her whistle, and Australia tick the kick off!
It has been a really cagey start to the affair, with most of the match being played in the middle of the park. Australia win the first corner of the night, but the Indian defence clear it with much trouble.
Another short corner down the right, and Australia almost capitalise on the situation with lethal intent. The ball reaches Pearson, whose flick hits the side netting.
Mouithys puts Austalia ahead before the half-hour mark! It was sloppy play from India, losing posession in their own half, and the ball is quickly played to Mouithys. The Australian number 21 takes a first time shot that flies past Munni and nestles into the bottom corner.
Australia have complete control of the game, with India struggling to even get out of their own half. A free-kick on the half-way line gives the Blue Tigresses a chance to go forward, but the long ball is easily gathered by Pearson.
India have responded well since going behind, trying to create more running spaces down the flanks. However, the Australian full-backs have held firm so far. After just a solitary minute of stoppage time, referee Maika Vanderstichel blows her whistle to bring the first half to an end.
The players are out of the tunnels and on the pitch for the second half. India, trailing by an early goal, take the kick off to get the half rolling. No changes at the break for either side.
After the opening five minutes of the second half was completely dominated by Australia, we see India in full flow for possibly the first time tonight. The Young Tigresses break with pace down the right flank. Even though the resulting shot if off target, it's a positive sign.
A second goal seemed inevitable for Australia, and it's actually an own goal by Basnett that puts the Young Matildas two goals ahead before the hour mark. The Indian defenders have struggled against their opponent's pace, and a good cross from the left is deflected past Munni by Basnett.
Pamela Conti finally turns towards her bench as time ticks away. Ritu Badaik and Joya are the ones coming off, and Alisha Lyngdoh and Pearl Fernandes come on in their place to shore up the attack.
Seconds after the substitute come on, Australia add a third goal to their tally, but the whistle goes for offside. It was a brilliant cross from the right by Leong, and it finds the head of Jugovic who heads it past Munni to find the back of the net. However, it won't count.
Australia almost score again with a brilliant move! A long through ball finds the run of Puckett, who does well to keep herself onside. Munni comes rushing out and loses the battle, but Puckett's first-touch is heavy and the ball runs away from her. She goes down in pain, and there's a halt in play. She is eventually replaced by by Karaberis. Goalscorer Mouithys is replaced by Taylor.
With just five minutes of regulation time remaining, Australia are happy to pass the ball around in the midfield area against a tiring Indian side. Unless something changes drastically, the contest looks as good as over.
After four minutes of stoppage time, the referee blows her whistle to bring the match to an end. India suffer a 2-0 defeat in their campaign opener, and, frankly, it could have been a much worse outcome. The Young Tigresses were completely toothless throughout the game, failing to test Pearson. A lot of work to do for head coach Pamela Conti before the upcoming games.
