The players are lined up for the national anthem, and the stadium is absolutely buzzing! Both teams are fired up and ready to go, and we’re here for all the action. Don’t go anywhere—this is going to be amazing.
And we're off! The game kicks off at the Salt Lake Stadium, setting the stage for an exciting clash. Just a minute in, Mumbai City FC’s Vikram Partap Singh finds himself flagged for offside, halting an early attacking move.
Mumbai City face an early concern as TP Rehenesh looks uncomfortable after claiming an East Bengal corner. Play is halted for a while as the medical staff rushes onto the field to tend to him, but he’s good to go and ready to continue.
It's 18 minutes in, and Mehtab Singh plays a brilliant ball over the top for Nikos Karelis, but the Greek striker just mistimes his run and gets caught offside.
Fast forward to the 14th minute, Vikram gets a chance at goal after some neat build-up play with Brandon. He takes the shot from the edge of the box, but unfortunately, it curls harmlessly wide. So close, but not quite!
And now, East Bengal earns two corners back-to-back, but can't do anything with them! The ball just bobbles harmlessly away and rolls out for a goal kick. So much for all that pressure.
Of course, it’s Lallianzuala Chhangte who gets Mumbai City’s first goal, finally making their pressure count! Brandon Fernandes plays a delightful ball into Chhangte’s path, and with a brilliant first-time finish, he drills it past Gill to put it in the back of the net.
Mumbai City’s relentless attack continues! First, Nikos Karelis gets the goal, and then Yoell van Nieff delivers a brilliant through ball for Karelis to chase. His left-footed shot is initially saved low by Gill, but Karelis is quick to react, burying the rebound with his right to double The Islanders’ lead. What a clinical finish.
Half-time arrives, and Mumbai City fully deserves its two-goal lead. The home side has struggled to make any real progress up the field, while Mumbai City has controlled every aspect of the game, including the scoreline.
Leading the charge and shining brightly is none other than the skipper, Lallianzuala Chhangte, who’s been the standout performer.
And we’re back for the second half! East Bengal FC 0, Mumbai City FC 2. The hosts are now pushing hard, determined to overturn the two-goal deficit and get back into the game.
East Bengal FC is loving the ball early on in this half. Jeakson picks it up 30 yards out and thinks, "Why not?" He goes for an ambitious shot, but it flies well over the goal. Guess he was aiming for the stars!
And we guess Mumbai City were so happy with their dominance, they gifted a goal to East Bengal. Mahesh made a strong run down the left, cutting inside to take a shot that was saved by Rehenesh. The rebound fell to PV Vishnu, who played it back into the six-yard area, and it hit Sahil Panwar before rolling into the net.
And all you can hear is the roar of the home crowd, why not, it’s 83rd minute and the game is tied. David Lalhlansanga Hmar delivers with a powerful left-footed shot from the center of the box, sending it into the bottom left corner. The assist comes from Hector Yuste, who cleverly heads the ball towards him following a corner. What a moment for the home side!
Goal East Bengal FC 2-2 Mumbai City FC
The loud home crowd fell silent as Mumbai City fought back to deny East Bengal the equalizer. East Bengal were celebrating and then the 87th minute GOAL took it all away. It was Nikolaos Karelis. Nathan Rodrigues threads a beautiful through ball to Karelis on the edge of the box. With a composed touch, Karelis curls the ball past a charging Gill to put Mumbai City back in the lead.
A long throw-in into the box for the Red and Golds, but no one manages to get on the end of it, and the ball drifts out for a goal kick. And with that, the referee blows for full-time. Mumbai City claim the win, leaving East Bengal with no chance for a late comeback.
