The national anthems and other pre-match formalities are done. The referee blows the whistle and with it Australia get the ball rolling.
Baris Yilmaz attempted to pick out a teammate with a forward pass, but the delivery lacked precision and drifted into an area occupied by neither side. With no Turkish player able to latch onto it, the promising attack fizzled out harmlessly.
Australia's Nestroy Irakunda gets a beautiful pass and finds him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Irakunda makes the most of the golden opportunity and fires the ball into the bottom left corner to get Australia 1-0 ahead in the game.
That the halftime whistle by the referee and with it the stoppage time comes to an end and both set of players are heading back to their respective locker rooms. Australia would be the happier time as they are leading by 1-0 at halftime courtesy of a 27th minute goal by Nestroy Irakunda.
Harry Souttar climbed highest to meet the corner, but the goalkeeper produced a superb save to deny his header from finding the bottom-left corner.
Arda Guler launches a monstrous piledriver. He controlled the ball well and fired a shot from the edge of the D. It could have been a tricky one for the goalkeeper but fortunately for Australia, the ball deflected after hitting one of the defenders.
Goaalll... Australia doubles their advantage as Connor Metcalfe tricks his way past his opponents and fires a scintillating shot from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner. Turkey goalkeeper had no chance of reaching to the ball and the lead goes to 2-0.
That's the final whistle and with it the stoppage time comes to an end. Australia beat Turkey in their opening game of the World Cup by 2-0 courtesy of goals from Nestroy Irakunda and Connor Metcalfe.
