Emam Ashour opened the scoring for the Pharaohs in the 13th minute with a powerful header. Australia leveled in the 55th minute through a Mohamed Hany own goal, forcing the match into extra time. Despite late heroics from Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach, the match went to a shootout where the Egyptians displayed clinical precision, successfully converting all four of their penalties. A late tactical substitution by Australia proved costly, as veteran Mathew Ryan failed to stop any spot-kicks. Hossam Abdelmaguid buried the decisive penalty, sealing Egypt's first-ever knockout-stage win. Egypt now advance to face the winner of the Argentina vs Cape Verde match in the Round of 16 in Atlanta.
