The Metropolitano is a sea of white, blue and red, with coloured placards a striking partner to the Atleti fans' pre-match chorus. As the noise continues, tonight's referee, the Dutch Serdar Gozubuyuk, leads the players out to a fantastic atmosphere.

The match gets underway. Tottenham Hotspur show pro-activeness and are the first one to trouble the Atletico Madrid defence. They are attacking from left to right and Atletico Madrid are moving right to left. Randal Kolo Muani could have ended up with an opportunity but Atletico blocks successfully.

The decision to keep Vicario out comes back to haunt Tudor. Kinsky slips as he passes out from the back, and Alvarez works the ball over to Llorente, who runs in from outside the box and side-foots into the bottom-left corner in punishing fashion. Atletico are ahead in the game in no time and Tottenham's sufferings continue.

Another slip and another goal. The turf is looking tricky tonight, as Van de Ven slips while trying to deal with a routine Sarr pass. Griezmann pounces and tucks the ball into the bottom-right for his 14th goal in all competitions this term.

Tudor must tearing off his hair and he has to sub in Vicario for Kinsky. It is the latter's error again that leads to another goal. A Van de Ven pass goes back to the keeper, and he miskicks a pass across his own box to Alvarez, and he taps it into an empty net. Spurs are 3-0 down in the opening 15 minutes and all of them were individual errors.

Another one goes in and Tottenham Hotspur are finding place to hide on the field. A change of keeper does nothing, despite a fine save from Vicario from Griezmann's crossed free-kick on the right. His parry loops up and the towering centre-back just about gets it over the line, with a buzz of the watch confirming celebrations

Spurs come forward down the left, and Richarlison, who gets resistance from the Atletico Madrid defence, cuts back in from the left of the box. He finds Porro, who touches the ball away from Ruggeri before sliding past Oblak for his first goal of the season. After a disastrous start, Spurs pull one back.

Tottenham Hotspur try to get back another goal. Romero's head from corner hits the right post. Richarlison's head from Porro's cross was also saved by Oblak. Earlier, Vicario made a good save against Lookman. Vicario stood his ground and send the shot behind with his right knee.

A dreadful first 45 minutes which Antonin Kinsky will never forget. He slipped twice and presented Atletico Madrid two opportunities which they put to bed. Lots of individual errors from Spurs led them concede 4 goals within the first 22 minutes. Kinsky was subbed off by Tudor and by the time Vicario came on, things were barely repairable. Yet, Spurs kept trying and Pedro Porro was able to pull one back. Romero's head unfortunately hit the post. To stay alive and competitive for the second leg Spurs will have to make sure they concede no more and get at least another goal back.

During the break, Tudor has sacrificed some pace in attack for strength in midfield. Tel comes off for Conor Gallagher. Dominic Solanke replaces Randal Kolo Muani.

Nothing is going Tottenham Hotspur's way and they concede another in the second half. A fast counter-attack from Atletico Madrid starting from Jan Oblek, A lovely backheel in the build-up from Griezmann to send Alvarez away across halfway and he puts it away extending Atletico's lead further.

Danso launches in yet another long throw. It's in from the left and flicked on by Romero. It falls to the feet of Solanke! No! He just can't get it under his control, and Oblak claims with ease. Palhinha comes on in place of Richarlison. Simeone subs off Lookman and Llorente for Barrios and Sorloth.

Despite being the side who are down, Tottenham Hotspur show sparks in between of staying alive. Atletico have shown more desire to win but somehow Spurs keep themselves ongoing and they pull one back yet again. Oblak misplaces a pass, and Porro is able to slot Solanke into the box. The Englishman turns and smashes the ball high past the Slovenian into the right of the goal.

That's it! A forgettable performance from Igor Tudor and his side. Although it is mathematically possible for Tottenham Hotspur to make a comeback in the second leg, but their body language and attitude didn't tell so. The match started and ended with errors from Kinsky and the defenders. They slipped and presented opportunities to Llorente, Alvarez and Griezman. Pedro Porro tried to pull back things with scoring and assisting two goals. But in the second half too, Atletico looked the better side and they eventually snatched a 5-2 victory. Spurs will have to at their absolute best in their home to turn this around.
