ENG Vs SA, 1st ODI: Rassie Van Der Dussen, Aiden Markram Dampen Ben Stokes Farewell Game

England Test captain Ben Stokes could manage five and 0/44 in his final one-day international for his country. South Africa beat England by 62 runs in first ODI.

A spectacular century by Rassie van dar Dussen, all-round performance from Aiden Markram and Anrich Nortje's four wickets helped South Africa register a 62-run win over England in Ben Stokes' farewell ODI at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday. South Africa take 1-0 lead in three-match series.

South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and opted to bat first at Riverside Ground. 

Powered by Rassie van der Dussen's 133 off 117 balls, posted 333/5. Janneman Malan (57 off 77) and Aiden Markram (77 off 61) hit fifties. Liam Livingstone claimed two wickets for England, while Sam Curran, Moeen Ali and Brydon Carse got one each. The innings witnessed 32 fours, but not a single six.

In reply, England were all out for 271 in 46.5 overs despite half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow (63) and Joe Root (86). Stokes, playing his final ODI managed 5 and 0/44 with bat and ball respectively. For the visitors, Nortje finished with 4/53 while Tabraiz Shamsi and Markram claimed two apiece.

This is the ODI farewell match for Ben Stokes. The England Test captain on Monday announced his retirement from the 50-overs format, saying "three formats are just unsustainable for me now." Stokes entered the match with 2919 runs and 74 wickets in 104 ODIs.

England and South Africa have met 63 times in the format. The head-to-head record is 30-28 in favour of the Proteas.

Both the teams lost their previous ODIs series. South Africa were stunned by Bangladesh (1-2) at home in March, while England lost to India last week (1-2).
