Defending champions England responded to their defeat to New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opener by thrashing Bangladesh in Dharamsala on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, the Three Lions rode Dawid Malan's sublime 140 off 107 to post 364/9 in 50 overs of two distinct halves. The opener, who hit 16 fours and five sixes, found able support from Jonny Bairstow (52 off 59) and Joe Root (82 off 68) during a knock of the highest order. Once Malan's departure, Bangladesh bowlers managed to control the damage with a brilliant fightback. Yet still, the total proved more than enough for Jos Buttler's men as they dismissed Bangladesh for 227 in 48.2 overs. And the wrecker-in-chief was Reece Topley. Coming in for star all-rounder Moeen Ali, the left-arm pacer registered figures of 4/43 in an inspired spell at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. England will now head to Delhi for a Sunday meeting with Afghanistan. Bangladesh, who started the tournament with a sprightly win over the Afghans, will travel further south, to Chennai for a date with New Zealand on Friday. 6:00 pm: BAN 191/7 - Overs 30-40 Highlights
Mushfiqur Rahim got out in the 31st over for 51 runs off 64 balls and after that, Towhid Hridoy was the lone batter who looked confident. Mahedi Hasan also gave him some good support but the support could not last more. After a hard fight, Towhid Hridoy also departed in the 40th over. Only tail left now.

5:15 pm: BAN 160/5 - Overs 20-30 Highlights
Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy are taking the Bangladesh innings forward. After Litton Das 76(66) lost his wicket to Chris Woakes, both batters kept it slow but steady. Bangladesh is still more than 200 runs behind the target, but these batters have played some positive strokes and kept the expectations of Bangladesh fans alive.

4:40pm: BAN 116/4 - Overs 10-20 Highlights
Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim have settled the nerves for Bangladesh after quick wickets. Litton Das completed his fifty with ease. Pitch is also easier for now than it was earlier. The ball is not swinging anymore. But Mark Wood has bowled a few good overs in between and conceded just 6 runs in the first two overs. Adil Rashid came to bowl in the 20th over, the first spin over. Bangladesh is also going good so far, have not lost any wickets while chasing.

3:50pm: BAN 57/4 - Overs 1-10 Highlights
England are well and truly back in business. They have taken the fight out of the contest by scalping four early wickets and leaving Bangladesh with a mountain to climb. Reece Topley has picked up three wickets, including two in two balls, to dash Bangladesh's hopes. The sub-continental side still has some batting left, but the shortfall is too big.

3pm: BAN Start 2nd Innings With A Bang (BAN 12/1 In 1 Over)
We are back for the second innings. Bangaldesh have their task cut out as they chase a formidable target of 365. Chris Woakes starts proceedings with the new ball for England. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan out in the middle for Bangladesh. Excellent start for Das as he smacks Woakes for three fours in a row. He wristily clips the second ball of the over for four, followed by a sumptous cover drive to the fence, and then a swivel pull over square leg. Bangladesh are up and running

2:30pm: ENG 364/9 - Overs 41-50 Highlights
There was a flurry of wickets in the final 10 overs, and Bangladesh pulled things back admirably to stop England short of what could have been a demoralizing first-innings score. Losing six wickets in the death overs meant England could score only 66 runs off them, but Bangladesh will still have to chase a hefty 365.

1:41pm: ENG 298/3 - Overs 31-40 Highlights
We saw a masterclass in how to undertake a calculated assault from Malan today. The southpaw joined forces with Bairstow and Root to take England to the driver's seat and ends up with a blistering 107-ball 140 to his name. Malan departs, and so does their captain Jos Buttler, but England now eyeing a 400-plus score for sure.

12:50pm: ENG 187/1 - Overs 21-30 Highlights
The English are on a rampage here. They are taking it to the next level with some inventive and audacious batting. Root and Malan have unfurled the scoops, ramps and reverse sweeps and they seem to be targeting a 350-plus score here. Meanwhile, Malan is just five short of a splendid century.

12:07pm: END 128/1 - Overs 11-20 Highlights
England lost Bairstow to Shakib's guile, but they have continued to motor on in trademark fashion. They are a team that likes to play aggressively in every situation, and even more so after the advent of Bazball. Joe Root has joined Malan at the crease and is already scoring at run-a-ball. Bangladesh's spinners need to find a way to either put the brakes on or force a breakthrough.

10:31am: Play Begins
All in readiness here for the start of play. England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow on strike, and skillful left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman has the ball. Just one slip to start with. He bowls a length ball that bounces appreciably and Bairstow defends towards the point region.

The two teams are out now for the national anthem. As always, the pride is palpable in players' eyes. Play to get underway in about five minutes.

10:02am: Toss Update
Bangladesh have won the toss and will bowl first.

9:45am: Head-To-Head
The two teams have played each other 24 times in ODIs, and England have won 19 of those games, while the rest have seen Bangladesh emerging victors. In the last five encounters, England enjoy a 4-1 win record against the subcontinental team. However, Bangaldesh's solitary win came in the most recent clash between the two sides, in March this year. Bangladesh had beaten England by a handsome 50 runs in that game in Chattogram.

9:30am: Weather Conditions
The good news is that there is little to no chance of rain in Dharamsala. As the stadium is located on a hilly terrain, the weather will be pleasant, with temperatures expected to hover between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius and 57% humidity.

9:15am: Squads
England: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson, David Willey, Reece Topley.
Bangladesh: Tanzid Hasan, Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan (c), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Preview:
Notwithstanding their lopsided warm-up fixture, England and Bangladesh enter the field as equals today. In their rain-affected Guwahati match, England did emerge victorious but the Dharamsala fixture in the tournament proper offers an altogether different setting, and it's difficult to predict a straight outcome. Historically, England have a dominating presence in this particular fixture. That, however, doesn't make the defending champions the outright favourites against one of the presumed minnows of world cricket.  Consider this, in their ENG vs BAN ICC Cricket World Cup rivalry, it's 2-2 in four meetings so far. Also, England and Bangladesh have had contrasting starts to their respective 2023 ODI World Cup campaigns. While the defending champions suffered a nine-wicket defeat against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Bangladesh thrashed Afghanistan by six wickets in Dharamsala.
