Quetta Gladiators: Saud Shakeel(c), Shamyl Hussain, Rilee Rossouw, Hasan Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay, Ben McDermott(w), Tom Curran, Ahmed Daniyal, Alzarri Joseph, Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq
Karachi Kings: David Warner(c), Muhammad Waseem, Salman Agha, Saad Baig, Moeen Ali, Azam Khan(w), Khushdil Shah, Shahid Aziz, Hasan Ali, Adam Zampa, Mir Hamza
Karachi Kings suffer a big blow just in the first over of the match. Alzarri Joseph hand Gladiators their opening wicket of the match as he sends Muhammad Waseem packing. Waseem goes for a wild lofted shot, the ball hits the toe-end of the bat and went to the hands of Rilee Rossouw at mid-on. Big wicket for the Gladiators.
The powerplay has been pretty even for both sides. After Joseph struck early removing Muhammad Waseem, David Warner took him on and staged a counter-attack. Later, Ahmed Daniyal trapped Salman Ali Agha LBW landing a massive blow on Karachi Kings. But Warner finished the powerplay well with Saad Baig on his side.
After playing an impactful cameo of 30 runs of 23 balls, Saad Baig departs. Ahmed Daniyal keeps the ball short on the middle stump. Baig looks to pull seeing the length but gets more elevation than distance. Gets holed out at the deep. Warner stands ground on one end but he will need more support.
Since the spinners have joined the attack, they are suffocating Karachi Kings batter. First David Warner was caught and bowled by Abrar Ahmed. The slowness of the surface meant the ball arrived later than Warner anticipated and got lobbed from the toe end to the hands of Abrar. Azam Khan was looking to inject some momentum but he missed a ball from Usman Tariq that kept low. Moeen Ali and Khushdil Shah have a job in hand.
Ahmed Daniyal is really troubling the Karachi Kings batters as he scalps his third by dismissing Khushdil Shah. Once again dropped shot, Khushdil Shah goes for the pull but the ball bounces a little more than he expected. Doesn't get the connection right and the ball travels to the deep mid-wicket fielder.
Coming late in the middle order Moeen Ali plays an impactful knock of 48 runs in 29 balls and stays unbeaten to take Karachi Kings to a competitive total. Kings suffered a collapse in the middle overs after a moderately good start and struggled to inject momentum. That is when Moeen steadied the ship and gave some runs in the hands of the bowlers to fight. Gladiators although will be happy with their bowling performance, specially Daniyal, who scalped three wickets.
The openers Saud Shakeel and Shamyl Hussain are out on the crease and they have found the early boundaries needed to gain some momentum. Karachi has not been able to use the new ball against them as the openers now look to make the most of the field restrictions of powerplay. David Warner will need to make a move soon.
Shamyl Hussain sets the Lahore stage on fire with a 21-ball half-century. Some amazing strokeplay and he races to his fifty in no time. He specially picked up Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza as his targets and plundered them for plenty. With Shakeel on the other end, the duo had picked up pace and has powered Gladiators to an explosive start in the powerplay.
Two strikes in close succession help Karachi Kings claw their way back into the game to some extend. Salman Agha bagged the big fish as he dismissed the dangerous Shamyl Hussain shortly after his half-century. Once again, a ball dropped short got big on Shamyl and his pull found no elevation. Mid-wicket fielder grabbed an easy catch. Adam Zampa strikes next as he castles Khawaja Nafay. Nafay got beaten by the googly.
Quetta Gladiators need 58 runs in 30 balls with 7 wickets in hand. They were absolutely cruising after the powerplay but three wickets for the spinners slowed them down enough for Kings to remain alive in the game. The experience of Moeen Ali came handy as he dismissed well-set Saud Shakeel to keep the game open. David Warner will have to push for more wickets to further push Gladiators into nervy territories.
Karachi Kings have their nose ahead in the match now as they have managed to keep things tight for some time. The equation has now went against Quetta Gladiators and they are looking forward to Ben McDermott to take them over the line. Mcdermott has found two boundaries from Mir Hamza and has kept Gladiators in the game.
An over from Hasan Ali almost decides the game for Karachi Kings. Hasan Nawaz departs in the second ball, as he miscued a shot. Next ball, Tom Curran gets cleaned up. In the last ball of the same over, after hitting a boundary Ahmed Daniyal departs. Slices a big shot to the hands of Moeen Ali at point. Ben McDermott does not get strike and Karachi can smell the victory here.
The match was almost decided in the 19th over and they successfully closed down the match to secure a 14-run victory. The match swung like a pendulum between the two sides and in the end it was David Warner and co who came out victorious. After Shamyl Hussain's knock and the powerplay, it didn't look like Karachi will be able to defend their score. But Salman Ali Agha, Adam Zampa and Moeen Ali brought them back in the game. Hasan Ali then kept striking and scalped three wickets in the penultimate over to ensure victory for his side. Despite his best efforts, Ben McDermott failed to take them over the finishing line. Moeen Ali and David Warner played a big role earlier to take Kings to a competitive total.
