Australia and New Zealand went head to head in the 1st T20I of the Chappell-Hadlee T20I 2025 series, at Mount Maunganui. Australia decided to bowl first after winning the toss. The decision slightly went into their favour as they they restricted the Kiwis on 181 runs. The target didn't seem easy but it was achievable, considering the favourable batting conditions.
New Zealand had a horrible start, losing their three wickets on just six runs. However, Tim Robinson and Daryl Mitchel steadies the ship and stitched a 92-run stand for the fourth wicket. Mitchell departed after scoring 34 runs but Robinson continued the attack and ended up smashing his maiden T20I century.
His unbeaten 104-run knock helped Kiwis to put up a fighting total against a strong-looking Australian batting lineup. Ben Dwarshuis was the star bowler for Australia, picking up two crucial wickets while conceding 40 runs. Josh Hazlewood and Matthew Short also picked a wicket each.
Chasing the target, Australian openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head batted aggressively from the start and built a 67-run stand for the first wicket. With the help of Marsh's 85-run knock and a collective batting effort from other batters like Short and Tim David, the Kangaroos easily chased the target.
They still had 21 balls to spare with 6 wickets still remaining. Australia are now leading the three-match series 1-0 and would like to seal the series in the 2nd match itself, which will take place on Friday, October 3 at the same venue.
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and have opted to bowl against New Zealand.
