On a high-stakes night in Mullanpur, Rohit Sharma turned back the clock and delivered a masterclass when it mattered most. The former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper entered the record books during the India Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator against Gujarat Titans (GT) by becoming only the second batter in IPL history to breach the 7000-run milestone.

Needing 43 runs at the start of the match to join the elite club, Rohit reached the landmark in style — with a towering six — bringing up not just his fifty but also a special IPL record. It took the ‘Hitman’ 271 matches to reach the milestone, a testament to his enduring legacy and consistency across seasons.

Before this game, Rohit’s record in playoff matches had been a rare blemish on his otherwise stellar career — averaging just 15. But under the pressure of an Eliminator, and with the franchise aiming for yet another title, Rohit chose the perfect moment to rise above the past.

At the time of filing this story, he remained unbeaten on 67 off just 42 balls, peppered with eight crisp boundaries and two towering sixes, steering MI to 151/2 after 14.1 overs.

In doing so, Rohit also closed the gap — albeit a sizeable one — with Virat Kohli, who tops the all-time IPL run chart with 8618 runs in 256 games. Kohli’s form this season has been noteworthy, but Rohit’s innings in a knockout contest added a fresh layer to their celebrated rivalry in the tournament’s history.

First Indian To Smash 300 IPL Sixes

But that wasn’t the only record Rohit shattered. His second six of the night also made him the first Indian batter to hit 300 sixes in the IPL, another massive feat in a format built on power-hitting. Only Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, has more sixes in the tournament’s history — a record that now looks a little less out of reach for Rohit.

West Indian legend Chris Gayle continues to dominate the IPL six-hitting charts with a staggering 357 maximums in just 142 matches, a record that remains unmatched. His power-hitting legacy stands tall, comfortably ahead of Rohit Sharma, who recently became the first Indian to smash 300 sixes in the tournament.

Following them is Virat Kohli, who sits third on the list with 291 sixes. While Gayle’s explosive style set the benchmark, both Rohit and Kohli have showcased remarkable consistency over the years, steadily climbing the six-hitting leaderboard.
