India now face West Indies in a virtual semifinal decider
India delivered a statement performance in a must-win ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights clash, defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs in Chennai to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
After being asked to bat first, India produced a batting exhibition, piling up 256/4, the highest total of the tournament. Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a rapid 55, while Ishan Kishan (38) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) ensured the momentum never dipped. The finishing touch came from Hardik Pandya, whose unbeaten 50 off 23 balls, alongside Tilak Varma’s 44*, powered India past the 250 mark.
Chasing a daunting 257, Zimbabwe began steadily through Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani but struggled to match the escalating required rate. India’s spinners Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy applied control in the middle overs, forcing risks and triggering regular breakthroughs.
Despite wickets falling around him, Bennett continued to counterattack and brought up a superb half-century, keeping Zimbabwe mathematically alive deep into the chase.
Bennett finished unbeaten on a valiant 97, but Zimbabwe could only reach 184/6 in 20 overs as India completed a dominant win that also eliminated Zimbabwe from semifinal contention.
While the victory significantly improved India’s position in Group 1, the margin fell short of the required Net Run Rate boost needed to move past West Indies, setting up a virtual knockout clash between the two sides for a semifinal berth.
