Yashasvi Jaiswal In Trouble? ICC Punishes India Opener For Fiery Altercation With Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have both faced official sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a fiery on-field altercation on the opening day of the second Test match in Colombo. Both players were found to have violated Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, resulting in immediate financial penalties and disciplinary consequences.

According to the official match reports, both players were fined 25 percent of their respective match fees. In addition to the monetary fine, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary records of each player. This marks the first recorded offense for both Jaiswal and Fernando within a 24-month rolling period.

The charges were officially leveled by the match officiating crew, comprising on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.

Fortunately for both cricketers, they admitted to the Level 1 breaches and readily accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel, bypassing the necessity of a formal disciplinary hearing.

The incident itself occurred during a tense passage of play in the 17th over of India's first innings. Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando managed to break through Yashasvi Jaiswal's defense, bowling the Indian opener for 45 runs and denying him a well-earned half-century.

As Jaiswal began walking back toward the pavilion, Fernando delivered an aggressive send-off, prompting the left-handed batter to stop, turn around, and march straight back toward the bowler to confront him.

As words were angrily exchanged, the situation escalated rapidly when Fernando moved his head aggressively toward Jaiswal. In retaliation, Jaiswal leaned forward sharply, causing their heads and helmets to make direct physical contact.

The visibly hostile confrontation drew immediate concern from surrounding players and match officials, with Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva and on-field umpires rushing in to separate the two players before things could deteriorate further.

The breach fell squarely under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which strictly prohibits inappropriate physical contact with opposing players, support personnel, or match officials.

While both players have accepted their punishments and moved on to continue competing in the high-stakes Test series, the incident has reignited conversations around on-field temperaments and the line between competitive intensity and code violations.
