Devdutt Padikkal has etched his name in the record books once again, bringing up a magnificent century on Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground in Colombo. Reaching the three-figure mark with a gentle single down to long-on off Prabath Jayasuriya, the left-hander removed his helmet to soak in a warm ovation from the Indian dressing room.

It has been an innings of great character and fortune for Padikkal, who survived a couple of tough dropped chances early on his knock when he was on nought and one.

However, he made the hosts pay dearly, building on his previous stellar Test century of 167 in Galle with another masterclass in patience and shot-making. Blending watchful defense with crisp square cuts and sweeps against the spinners, Padikkal anchored the innings brilliantly to guide India past crucial milestones in the post-tea session.

Throughout his stay at the crease, Padikkal demonstrated a masterclass in patience and calculated method. He shared vital partnerships, first steadying the ship alongside captain Shubman Gill—who also notched up a fluent half-century—and later anchoring the innings through the post-tea sessions alongside the middle-order.

lending watchful, disciplined defense against Sri Lanka’s probing seamers with crisp square cuts and deft sweeps against the slow turning ball, Padikkal expertly managed the innings tempo. Even after losing partners—including Rishabh Pant who had to retire hurt following a blow—Padikkal kept his composure, steering India past crucial milestones and further cementing his burgeoning reputation as a reliable pillar in India's Test lineup.
