After taking one wicket for 103 runs in Galle, the spinner's role in India's combination was being discussed, with reports suggesting that the team could consider another option, particularly with Sri Lanka expected to have several left-handers in their batting order.

However, Gill's confirmation at the toss made it clear that Kuldeep's absence was due to an infection. While his performance in the first Test had fuelled debate over his place, the immediate reason for him missing the Colombo Test is his health. The development also explains why the pre-match discussions around India's spin combination gathered momentum in the lead-up to the game.

India have used the opportunity to hand Saransh Jain his Test debut. The off-spinner had been in contention before the match, and reports had already indicated that he was a strong possibility for the playing XI. His inclusion gives India a different spin option and adds further depth to the side.
