Summary
  • Kuldeep Yadav misses the Colombo Test due to an infection, Gill confirms

  • His absence had sparked speculation over India’s spin combination before the match

  • Saransh Jain replaces Kuldeep and makes his Test debut for India

Kuldeep Yadav’s absence from India’s playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo raised plenty of questions, especially after reports before the match suggested that a change could be on the cards.

The mystery was cleared up at the toss when India captain Shubman Gill confirmed that the left-arm wrist-spinner had missed the game due to an infection. India, who lead the two-Test series 1-0 following their 165-run victory in Galle, will now look to complete a clean sweep in Colombo.

Gill Confirms Infection Behind Kuldeep’s Absence

Kuldeep’s place had already become a talking point ahead of the Colombo Test. After taking one wicket for 103 runs in Galle, the spinner's role in India's combination was being discussed, with reports suggesting that the team could consider another option, particularly with Sri Lanka expected to have several left-handers in their batting order.

However, Gill's confirmation at the toss made it clear that Kuldeep's absence was due to an infection. While his performance in the first Test had fuelled debate over his place, the immediate reason for him missing the Colombo Test is his health. The development also explains why the pre-match discussions around India's spin combination gathered momentum in the lead-up to the game.

India have used the opportunity to hand Saransh Jain his Test debut. The off-spinner had been in contention before the match, and reports had already indicated that he was a strong possibility for the playing XI. His inclusion gives India a different spin option and adds further depth to the side.

Saransh now gets the biggest opportunity of his career with India chasing a 2-0 series sweep. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have also been forced into changes after losing several key players, including Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Pathum Nissanka.

For Kuldeep, the focus will be on recovering from the infection. For Saransh, though, Colombo marks the beginning of his Test journey, and India will hope the debutant can make an immediate impact as they push for another series victory.
