India survived a breathtaking run-fest to defeat England by seven runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, booking a place in the final against New Zealand.

The match produced 499 runs and dozens of boundaries, making it one of the highest-scoring knockout games in T20 World Cup history. India posted 253/7 in 20 overs, while England’s spirited chase ended at 246/7 despite a stunning century from Jacob Bethell.

India’s batting display was built around a sensational innings from Sanju Samson, who smashed 89 off 42 balls, striking eight fours and seven sixes at a strike rate above 200. He received strong support from Ishan Kishan (39 off 18) and Shivam Dube (43 off 25) as India accelerated through the middle overs. By the end of the powerplay India were already cruising at 67/1, and the scoring rate never slowed as the hosts crossed 100 in 8.3 overs and 150 in 12.4 overs.

Dube’s aggressive cameo helped India maintain the momentum before a late run-out ended his innings, while Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma chipped in during the death overs to push the total beyond 250. England’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, with several overs going for double digits as India capitalized on the flat Mumbai pitch.

England’s chase started at a furious pace but quickly hit turbulence. Hardik Pandya removed Phil Salt early, and Jasprit Bumrah struck to dismiss Harry Brook with a clever slower delivery after Axar Patel produced a spectacular running catch. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell briefly steadied the innings, but India continued to pick up wickets at crucial intervals.

Despite the setbacks, Jacob Bethell produced one of the best innings of the tournament, smashing 105 off 48 balls to keep England alive in the chase. The young left-hander dominated both pace and spin, launching several sixes and pushing the required rate within reach heading into the final overs. However, India managed to keep the pressure on through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.

Jasprit Bumrah’s 18th-over heroics turn the match

The decisive moment of the game came in the 18th over, when Jasprit Bumrah conceded just six runs while England were still firmly in contention. With Bethell in full flow and the required rate manageable, Bumrah delivered a masterclass in death bowling. Mixing slower balls, yorkers and tight lines, he prevented the England batters from finding the boundary.

That over proved pivotal because it dramatically increased the pressure on England heading into the final stages. Instead of attacking freely, England suddenly needed a surge in the last two overs, forcing their batters into risky shots. Cricket analysts and commentators later described Bumrah’s spell as the moment that swung the momentum decisively toward India. His final figures of 4-0-33-1 underlined his control in a high-scoring contest.

Players react after thrilling semi-final

After the match, Sanju Samson credited Bumrah for keeping India ahead during England’s chase. The wicketkeeper-batter admitted that having a bowler like Bumrah in the team provides huge confidence in crunch moments.

"Very happy how the team turned up today and all credit goes to Jasprit Bumrah, the world class bowler, once in a generation bowler. I think that's what he delivered today. This (award) should go to him actually. If we didn't bowl that way in the death overs, I think I would not be standing here." Samson said.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav also praised the team’s composure, highlighting the collective effort with both bat and ball. According to the skipper, the team believed their total was competitive and trusted their bowlers to deliver in the closing overs.

"The way Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and the other bowlers pulled the game back was unbelievable. We all know what he’s capable of and what he’s done for India over the years (on Jasprit Bumrah). He did the same thing again today, raised his hand and showed character to pull the game away from them. It was a special bowling performance." Suryakumar Yadav said.

England captain Harry Brook acknowledged the quality of India’s batting but admitted that missed chances in the field proved costly. A dropped catch of Samson early in the innings allowed the Indian batter to build a match-defining knock.

"Obviously, they played extremely well (on the Indian batting). All of our lads should be really proud of the way we played tonight and throughout this competition. Absolutely. I’ll hold my hands up and say that I made a big mistake there, dropping Samson. As the old saying goes, catches win matches, and unfortunately things just didn’t go our way in the field tonight. At the end of the day, it cost us." Brook said.
