Lunch on Day 4 at Edgbaston, and it’s India who continue to dictate terms, stretching their lead to a commanding 357 with seven wickets still in hand. The morning began with KL Rahul and Karun Nair cautiously negotiating England’s opening burst from Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, mixing solid defence with the occasional boundary.
Carse, despite battling a sore toe, bowled a determined spell and was rewarded when he drew a loose drive from Nair on 26, breaking the 45-run second-wicket stand just before drinks.
Rahul, composed and assured, brought up his 18th Test half-century, but his fluent knock of 55 was ended by a superb delivery from Josh Tongue that angled in and clipped his middle stump. England might have hoped to tighten the screws after that, but Rishabh Pant had other plans.
The left-hander immediately took the attack to the bowlers, charging down to his very first ball, and soon had Tongue, Shoaib Bashir and even Ben Stokes under pressure with a flurry of audacious strokes. His unbeaten 41 off just 35 balls, peppered with sixes and boundaries, has kept the scoring rate at an impressive 4.5 per over. With Shubman Gill holding firm at the other end, India look set to bat England out of the contest in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, at New Road, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has set the cricketing world abuzz, smashing the fastest-known century in Youth ODIs—a stunning 52-ball ton for India Under-19s against England Under-19s in Worcester. The prodigy, who had already lit up the series with scores of 48 off 19, 45 off 34, and 86 off 31, took his stroke play to another level, dismantling the English attack with remarkable ease. His incredible feat underscores a talent well beyond his years and marks him as one to watch for the future.

Rishabh Pant wasted no time making his intentions clear, charging at Ben Stokes and then Josh Tongue in a typically audacious display. After a miscued lofted shot off Stokes that should have ended his stay—only for Zak Crawley to spill a simple chance at mid-off—Pant made England pay immediately. He flicked Tongue for four to long leg and followed it up with a glorious straight six, racing to 10 off 5 balls. Pant looks in no mood to hang around, and that dropped catch could prove costly for England.
Josh Tongue struck with a peach of a delivery to remove KL Rahul, sending his middle stump cartwheeling. Bowling from wide of the crease at 86mph, Tongue angled it in before it seamed away to beat Rahul’s bat as he looked to work it through mid-on. Tongue, who has now claimed 10 wickets in the series—the most by any bowler so far despite his expensive economy—grinned in delight as England found a crucial breakthrough.
KL Rahul has continued his fine second-innings form, backing up his 137 at Headingley with a well-crafted half-century at Edgbaston. After a scratchy first-innings effort where he managed just 2 off 26 balls, Rahul has looked far more assured this time. He brought up his fifty with a confident punch through wide mid-off as Josh Tongue overpitched, showcasing positive intent from the start.
Drinks on Day 4, and it’s been a steady morning of traditional Test cricket. England’s bowlers have kept things tight, while India’s batters have been patient, punishing the occasional loose delivery. At 109/2, India’s lead has swelled to 289. KL Rahul looks composed, nearing a well-earned half-century, while Shubman Gill has settled in confidently after Karun Nair’s dismissal — the sole breakthrough for England so far.
England finally found a breakthrough on Day 4 as Brydon Carse removed Karun Nair for a well-made 26. After unsettling Nair with a brute that struck his helmet grille, Carse persisted with probing lines. The reward came with a full delivery that shaped away late, drawing a loose drive and finding the edge. Jamie Smith made no mistake, diving to his right to pouch a sharp catch.
England’s bowlers, so effective with the new ball earlier in the Test, have struggled to find the right lengths in this innings, managing just one wicket in the first 15 overs. In their eagerness to hunt for breakthroughs, they’ve often pitched too full, allowing India’s batters to cash in. Ben Stokes faces the tricky task of balancing attack and defence, as seen when KL Rahul’s edge flew safely past a sparse slip cordon for his second boundary of the morning, with most catchers stationed in front of the wicket.
KL Rahul and Karun Nair will walk out to start the proceedings with the bat for India to extend the lead, whereas England pacers will look for early wickets
Pitch Report of Day 4 by Cheteshwar Pujara: "Slightly overcast. This is a day 4 pitch, but it is still pretty flat. There is some rough outside the left-hander's off stump if you are bowling from that end. Jadeja and Sundar will try to use it late in the day or tomorrow. This pitch will just slow down a bit and stay low as the game progresses. Even if you play a First-Class game after five days of this Test match on this pitch, you will still end up scoring plenty of runs.
