South Africa inserted England to bat first and the hosts Ben Duckett and Joe Root cheaply. Jamie Smith, though, kept finding boundaries on the other end and soon raised his half-century. Things were in control of England when they were at 84/2 in 13.5 overs.
However, in the next 11.2 overs, the match turned upside down and all of a sudden, England were bowled out for 134 in 24.3 overs. Maharaj picked up four wickets and Wiaan Mulder struck thrice. Smith's 54 was the highest score for England.
South Africa took just 20.5 overs to complete the chase with Dewald Brevis launching Adil Rashid for a six to finish the game.
Opener Aiden Markram was severe against debutant Sonny Baker who conceded 56 in five overs in his maiden ODI. Markram was dismissed for a 55-ball 86 by Adil Rashid when just 11 runs were needed for South Africa to win. Rashid also picked up wickets of Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs on successive balls but Brevis came in and hit a six off his second ball to seal the game.
Ryan Rickelton remained not out on 31.
