Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bowl first
Mumbai Indians: Amelia Kerr, G Kamalini(w), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Nicola Carey, Sajeevan Sajana, Amanjot Kaur, Poonam Khemnar, Triveni Vasistha, Shabnim Ismail, Sanskriti Gupta
Delhi Capitals: Shafali Verma, Laura Wolvaardt, Jemimah Rodrigues(c), Lizelle Lee(w), Marizanne Kapp, Niki Prasad, Chinelle Henry, Sneh Rana, Minnu Mani, Shree Charani, Nandani Sharma
A special milestone for Jemimah Rodrigues tonight. At just 25 years and 127 days, she becomes the youngest captain in WPL history, surpassing Smriti Mandhana’s previous record of 26 years and 230 days set in 2023.
Amelia Kerr and G Kamalini make their way to the middle, with Kerr taking strike to get things going. Marizanne Kapp has the new ball in hand and begins her run-up from over the wicket, looking to set the tone with pace and movement.
A very quiet start for Mumbai Indians Women. The opening over brings only two runs, both coming from a wide, as MIW crawl to 2 without loss. G Kamalini struggles to find timing and remains on 0 from 6 balls, while Amelia Kerr is yet to face a delivery.
MI 2/0 (1)
What a moment, and what a catch! Chinelle Henry strikes with her very first ball, and Amelia Kerr is gone for a golden duck and failed once again. Kerr chases a full delivery outside off, throws her hands at the drive, and gets a thick outside edge flying behind. Lizelle Lee reacts brilliantly, diving sharply to her right to pull off a stunning catch.
MI 2/1 (1.1)
Mumbai Indians Women find a little momentum in this over, picking up six valuable runs to move to 18 for 1. Nat Sciver-Brunt looks in fine touch on 14 off 11, unfurling a crisp boundary to ease some of the early pressure, while G Kamalini finally gets off the mark.
MI 18/1 (3)
Mumbai Indians Women continue to rebuild steadily, picking up six runs in the over to move to 33 for 1. Nat Sciver-Brunt looks fluent on 23 off 15, finding another boundary to keep the scoreboard ticking, while G Kamalini settles in on 7 from 15.
MI 33/1 (5)
Mumbai Indians Women finish the powerplay on a positive note, reaching 43 for 1 after six overs. After the early shock of Amelia Kerr’s golden duck, Nat Sciver-Brunt took responsibility and played with authority, racing to 32 off 20 balls with clean boundaries and sharp running. G Kamalini provided stability at the other end on 8 from 16, ensuring MI didn’t lose further wickets.
MI 43/1 (6)
Momentum swings in an eventful over as Nandani Sharma claims her maiden WPL wicket, dismissing G Kamalini for 16 after Lizelle Lee pulls off another sharp catch behind the stumps. Mumbai still collect 11 runs through boundaries and smart singles, moving to 54 for 2. Nat Sciver-Brunt continues to look fluent on 33 off 21, while Harmanpreet Kaur arrives and gets off the mark straight away. The over perfectly sums up the contest so far, runs on offer, but wickets keeping the pressure firmly alive.
MI 54/2 (7)
Mumbai Indians Women keep the scoreboard moving with a productive over, adding eight runs to reach 68 for 2. Nat Sciver-Brunt continues her fluent knock, moving to 44 off 27 with another well-timed boundary, while Harmanpreet Kaur settles in on 5 from 8. After the earlier wobble, this partnership is giving MI much-needed stability
MI 68/2 (9)
Nat Sciver-Brunt brings up a composed and classy half-century and moves to 57 off 40, once again showing her ability to control the tempo under pressure. Harmanpreet Kaur continues to rotate strike on 25 from 19, ensuring Mumbai don’t lose momentum.
MI 101/2 (13)
A big turning point in the innings as Shree Charani breaks through with the prized wicket of Nat Sciver-Brunt, who departs after a superb 70 off 46, caught sharply by Jemimah Rodrigues at extra cover. Mumbai still manage to collect 12 runs in the over, with Harmanpreet Kaur playing a gorgeous cover drive for four and moving to 32, while Nicola Carey gets off the mark with a fortunate boundary via byes and a single.
MI 127/3 (15)
Mumbai Indians Women turn up the heat with a brutal over, smashing 16 runs to surge to 143 for 3. Harmanpreet Kaur looks in complete control on 38 off 27, finding the fence twice with authority, while Nicola Carey adds late-fire support with quick runs.
MI 143/3 (16)
Harmanpreet Kaur brings up a brilliant half-century in style, launching a full toss from Minnu Mani high over deep mid-wicket for a towering six to reach 54 off 35 balls. Mumbai Indians continue their late surge, collecting 10 runs from the over to move to 166 for 3.
MI 166/3 (18)
Another dramatic over as Nandani Sharma delivers again under pressure. She cleans up Nicola Carey with a perfect full, straight delivery, ending a brisk cameo of 21 off 12 and picking up her second wicket. Mumbai still manage 10 runs in the over thanks to Sajeevan Sajana’s confident boundary and Harmanpreet Kaur’s quick running, though Harmanpreet survives a close run-out scare after a wild throw.
MI 176/4 (19)
What a sensational finish from Mumbai Indians Women! The final over explodes for 19 runs as Harmanpreet Kaur goes on a boundary blitz, smashing three fours in succession to race to 74 off 42 balls. MIW surge to a massive 195 for 4, with Harmanpreet completely owning the death overs and Sajeevan Sajana providing quick support. After Nat Sciver-Brunt set the tone earlier, Harmanpreet takes full charge and delivers a captain’s knock, turning Mumbai’s innings into a dominant, statement performance that leaves Delhi Capitals facing a daunting chase.
MI 195/4 (20)
Delhi openers - Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee make their into the field with a stiff chase of 196 on their hands. DC would be desperate to have a quick start from their dashing openers to give the much-needed early impetus from the bat. Shabana Ismail will the start the proceedings with the ball for MI.
DC 0/0 (0)
Delhi are in trouble here against Mumbai as they lost their top batters inside the powerplay. Not many teams are able to win it from here that too while chasing 196. Laura Wolvaardt (9), Lizelle Lee (10) and Shafali Verma (9) are the ones to depart. Nicola Carey has been the wrecker-in-chief for DC, claiming the wickets of Wolvaardt and Shafali in a single over.
Half of the Delhi Capital's side have gone back to the pavilion as the match is looking done and dusted for them. Jemimah Rodrigues (1) and Marizanne Kapp (10) - two stalwarts of the DC batting line up have won and with them the last hope of them chasing the target down also seems to have gone.
DC 61/5 (9)
Nikki Prasad is the last batter to depart for 12 off 18 balls. She was castled by Amelia Kerr in the 12th over. With this wicket, DC have lost their 6th batter and they still need 108 runs in 48 balls which looks quite improbable from here.
DC 88/6 (12)
The match looks like a mere formality now as DC still require 78 runs off just 24 balls. Nat Sciver-Brunt dismissed Sneh Rana (12) to claim eighth Delhi wicket and her 2nd of the match. However, Chinelle Henry (46*) showed some resolve as brought DC to 118/7 after the end of 16 overs to minimize the deficit from the target.
Sanskriti Gupta gets Nandini Sharma (0) to bowl out Delhi Capitals for 145 and sealing the deal for Mumbai Indians by 50 runs. After losing a last-ball thriller against RCB yesterday, MI returned with a bang and pip last year's runners-up by 50 runs. Not the ideal start for Jemimah Rodrigues as a captain and they'll have to fix many things before taking field in their next match.
That's a wrap from our end. We'll meet soon with another blog, until then, bye bye.
