UP 2027 Polls: Nitin Nabin’s West UP Tour, Akhilesh Yadav’s 'PDA Rath' Signal Early Campaign Push

Uttar Pradesh’s 2027 Assembly contest has begun to move from party rooms to the ground, with the BJP reviewing its organisation in western Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi Party preparing a statewide PDA rath campaign. The opening moves show that the fight for the political narrative has started.

The BJP and SP have both begun translating internal planning into field action on September 21, 2026, as they prepare for the next state election. The BJP is focusing on western Uttar Pradesh while the SP is taking its social coalition message directly to voters.

The BJP is seeking a third consecutive term in the state. The SP, led by Akhilesh Yadav, is framing its early campaign around political representation, social justice and local grievances against the BJP government.

BJP's Western Push

BJP national president Nitin Nabin begins a two-day visit to Meerut and Saharanpur on Monday as the party sharpens its election machinery. He is scheduled to meet workers, office-bearers and former public representatives and gather feedback from the ground.

Western Uttar Pradesh matters to the BJP’s 2027 calculations. The region has 71 Assembly constituencies and the party’s tally there fell from 54 seats in 2017 to 41 in 2022. That makes Nabin’s tour both an organisational review and a political stocktake.

In Meerut, Nabin will interact with around 4,800 Shakti Kendra convenors and mandal presidents from western Uttar Pradesh. He will also meet MPs, MLAs, former MPs, former MLAs and other former public representatives. In Saharanpur, he will meet party functionaries after visiting the Maa Shakumbhari Devi temple.

Lucknow Strategy Meeting

The tour follows a marathon strategy meeting in Lucknow. BJP national organisation general secretary BL Santosh, state in-charge Vinod Tawde, co-in-charge Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel, state president Pankaj Chaudhary and state organisation general secretary Dharampal Singh were among those who took part.

The party discussed how to turn the Yogi Adityanath government’s record into an election message and stop the opposition from defining the campaign. At that meeting, leaders discussed putting forward an "Akhilesh se behtar Yogi" narrative, comparing the Yogi government with the previous SP government headed by Akhilesh Yadav, Moneycontrol reported.

Leaders suggested the BJP campaign should focus on law and order, women’s safety, roads, electricity, public facilities, industrial development and employment. The party also discussed the SP’s PDA formulation of backward classes, Dalits and minorities and how to respond more forcefully through its organisation and social media network.

There was also unease.

Several office-bearers complained about the administration’s functioning at the grassroots. Party leaders said people were facing difficulties at police stations and tehsil offices, and that local BJP workers often could not get officers to respond to their concerns. Some leaders also alleged that certain officers were creating an atmosphere favourable to the SP and suggested they should be identified.

That leaves the BJP with a second challenge. Even as it wants voters to judge the Yogi government on development and law and order, its own cadre want quicker and more responsive administration at the local level.

SP's Rath Campaign

The SP is taking the road route. Akhilesh Yadav will launch the party’s PDA rath on September 24 with a programme in Rae Bareli.

He will travel in the rath from Churuwa on the Lucknow-Rae Bareli route to the residence of Harachandpur MLA Rahul Lodhi. The choice of Rae Bareli gives the first programme a clear political context.

That context comes from recent friction. On September 17, SP and ABVP workers clashed at Feroze Gandhi Degree College. SP workers later protested outside police and district administration offices. Lodhi and Bachhrawan MLA Shyam Sundar Bharti accused the police of misbehaviour and assault, and Lodhi alleged that he was beaten inside a police office. Police rejected the allegations and said their intervention was aimed at maintaining law and order.

For the SP, the rath is about more than Rae Bareli. It is the first visible step in taking the PDA formula into the election campaign across Uttar Pradesh. The party plans to use it to carry its message on political representation and social justice across the state.

Akhilesh has also set an organisational target of reducing the BJP’s vote share by 27,000 votes in every Assembly constituency. He has said the party will use technology, door-to-door outreach and direct interaction with people to work towards that target.

Competing Campaigns

The two parties are opening the campaign in different ways. The BJP is tightening its organisation, pushing the Yogi government’s record and trying to address complaints from its own cadre at the same time.

The SP is taking its PDA strategy straight to voters and building its message around social justice, representation and grievances against the BJP government. With Nabin’s western Uttar Pradesh tour and Akhilesh’s PDA rath launch coming within days of each other, the 2027 contest is no longer limited to organisational planning. The battle for the political narrative has begun.
