Summary
  • Tripura leaders across political parties strongly condemned the alleged racial harassment of a youth from the state by a Delhi content creator.

  • Politicians demanded strict legal action and the immediate arrest of the creator for using derogatory slurs under the guise of humour.

  • Leaders emphasized that freedom of expression must not shield racial discrimination or compromise the dignity of Northeast citizens.

Tipra Motha Party (TMP) founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has condemned the alleged harassment of a youth from Tripura by a content creator in Delhi, describing it as an "insult to the people" of the northeastern state.

A purported video showing content creator Amir Shokeen allegedly making derogatory remarks against the youth by calling him "chinky", "China president" and "Michael Jackson" went viral on social media on Tuesday, triggering widespread anger across the Northeast.

"Amir Shokeen has made fun of our people and even the historic name of Tripura by calling it C#%tpura. If this is not an insult to us, then what is? I demand that proper action must be taken. YTF, TSF and TISF (youth wings of TMP) should immediately file a case, and a police team should be sent to arrest this person," Debbarma wrote on Facebook.

Party sources said a delegation of TMP members of the District Council (MDCs) would submit a complaint against Instagram user Amir Shokeen at NCC police station on Wednesday, alleging cyberbullying, racial harassment and hate speech against indigenous people.

Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, also demanded immediate action by the Delhi Police against the content creator.

In a Facebook post, Chaudhury urged police to take "immediate, strict, and exemplary action" against what he described as a "parasitic and racist influencer".

"Arrest him. Prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. Make an example so loud and so clear that no one ever dares to insult Tripura and the Tiprasa ever again," he said.

Senior Congress MLA Birajit Sinha also condemned the alleged harassment of the Tripura youth.

"Extremely disturbing to see this behaviour towards a youth from Tripura by a person named Amir Shokeen, who has stooped so low on social media platforms, normalising racial profiling and sexual harassment towards people from NE India," Sinha wrote on Facebook.

"I deeply condemn this conduct by this person and would sincerely appeal for the harshest punishment. Racial profiling is not funny; we have seen multiple instances of racial abuse, violence and death in the past, including Anjel Chakma from Tripura. I would request CM Dr. Manik Saha and Tripura Police to take up this matter legally," he wrote on Facebook.
