Medical Evidence Confirms Gang Rape of Kolkata Law Student, Say Investigators

‘Set On Fire After Failed Gang-Rape Attempt,’ Says Student Who Was Found Naked On Highway

Medical and forensic examinations have confirmed the gang rape of a female student inside South Calcutta Law College, prompting a full-scale criminal investigation and widespread public anger.

According to police officials cited by PTI, the evidence aligns with the survivor’s complaint, revealing forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratchees along with visible injuries around her neck.

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, when the survivor had gone to the college to submit a test form. She was allegedly confined to the students’ union room and sexually assaulted for over three hours.

The prime accused, a former student and currently a practising criminal lawyer, is alleged to have raped her while two others stood guard outside the room. According to Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal, all three men are liable under the legal definition of gang rape: “In such cases, even those who facilitated the crime are considered equally culpable under the law.”

As per the Hindu, In her police complaint, the survivor stated that one of the accused had proposed marriage, which she declined, citing an existing relationship. The refusal allegedly provoked the attack, which lasted from 7:30 p.m. to 10:50 p.m. Despite repeated pleas for help and requests to be taken to a hospital, her appeals were ignored, police said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and written to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, demanding a time-bound and transparent investigation. “This is a deeply disturbing case, and we will ensure it does not fall through the cracks,” an NCW spokesperson said.

The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2024 rape and murder of a medical intern at RG Kar Medical College, highlighting recurring safety lapses within Kolkata’s educational institutions.

While public anger mounts, the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have promised swift action against all those involved.
