Union minister and BJP's West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar noted that the incident comes after the rape-murder of a doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, an incident that triggered protests across the country.

Majumdar, the union minister of state for education, alleged that the law and order situation in West Bengal is "in shambles" even though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee takes care of the police (Home) department.

After the rape-murder of an on-duty doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, the alleged incident of gang rape of a student took place in a law college in Kolkata, and this only goes on to prove that "female students are not safe in educational institutions" in the state, the BJP leader said.

"After the rape-murder of a doctor in a top medical college like R G Kar hospital, now a gang rape incident in a law college in the city has come up," he said.

Majumdar also referred to the killing of a girl in a bomb explosion recently during a TMC victory rally taken out before the results of the Kaliganj assembly bypoll were announced.

Condemning the alleged gang rape of a student in a law college in Kolkata, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said that a huge protest will be organised in connection with the crime.
