Justice Yashwant Varma Row: Allahabad HC Bar Association Calls Strike From Tomorrow

Hours after the Supreme Court announced the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association declared an indefinite strike starting March 25.

"Lawyers of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association will go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday in response to Justice Yashwant Varma’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court," said Anil Tiwari, president of the Bar Association to Hindustan Times.

"We are also sending a formal request to the Bar Associations in Lucknow regarding this matter," he added.

On Monday, the Supreme Court collegium officially confirmed its recommendation to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma to his home court, the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Varma is currently under investigation following the discovery of large sums of cash at his official residence in the national capital during a fire. He was not at home when the incident occurred.

Tiwari emphasized that the association opposes Justice Varma's transfer to any bench across the country.

"The Allahabad High Court Bar Association is opposed to any proposed transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma, whether to the Allahabad High Court, its Lucknow bench, or any other high court," he stated.

He demanded that Justice Verma's verdicts should be reviewed to restore the faith of the masses in the judicial system.

"All the judgements delivered by Justice Yashwant Varma during his tenure as a judge at Allahabad High Court and Delhi High Court be reviewed to inspire confidence of people at large to regain public faith in the judicial system," said the association's resolution.

The Supreme Court Collegium has announced the transfer of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma back to Allahabad High Court. While a reason has not been clearly stated in the notice issued, the top court's move comes after a fire at the judge's house led to the recovery of a huge pile of cash.

"The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad," reads the notice issued by the Supreme Court.

Earlier today, the Delhi High Court stated that all judicial work from Justice Yashwant Varma has been withdrawn with "immediate effect".
