Darkest Hour: Echoes Of Indira Gandhi’s Emergency Still Heard In India

On June 25, 1975, within one hour, India entered what is known as the darkest days of the world’s largest democracy. The then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties, arrested opposition leaders and activists, and muzzled free press. In the 21-months that followed, the State arrested 110,806 people for “internal security” reasons. On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the BJP-government has BJP observed the day as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' 2025, while the Congress shot back saying the ruling party was trying to distract the nation from the “Undeclared Emergency” that was their tenure.
