On the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, a day the BJP government has said will be observed ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', the Indian National Congress (INC), launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi’s BJP government saying that India had been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that was an “Undeclared Emergency” in itself.

In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh shared images of the statement, captioned: “Our statement on the five-fold assault on Indian Democracy that has led to the Undeclared Emergency@11."

Modi has been in office for 11 years, Congress pointed out, adding that during this period India had seen an "unbridled (increase in) hate speech and crackdown on civil liberties". Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in a social media post claimed that every section of the 140 crore people had been “troubled” in the last 11 years.

In a statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh, alleged that government critics have been routinely vilified, hate and bigotry is deliberately propagated by the ruling establishment, protesting farmers were branded as "Khalistanis", and those advocating for caste census were dismissed as "Urban Naxals."

"The killers of Mahatma Gandhi are glorified. Minorities live in fear of their lives and property. Dalits and other marginalised groups have been disproportionately targeted, and ministers making hate speeches have been rewarded with promotions," he claimed.

He pointed to alleged "attacks on the Constitution, tax terrorism and Intimidation of Businesses and institutions, control over the media and misuse of investigative agencies" as proof that an "undeclared emergency" was in place.

Congress’s criticism draws parallels with Senior Congress leader, Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s remarks during the Rajya Sabha session on December 16,2024, he conceded that the Emergency declared in 1975 was a “mistake”, it lasted for only 18 months, but today, the country is under “undeclared emergency” with no time limit, reported Hindustan Times.
