The planet Mercury is travelling across the face of the sun, an occurrence first documented in 1631. Such a transit takes place when Mercury, which is covered with basalt from ancient volcanic eruptions, comes between the Sun and the Earth, and Mercury is seen as a small black dot moving across the face of the Sun. A transit like this only happens about 13 times in a century, usually in the months of May or November.
