Speaking at South Korea's Liberation Day ceremony, Lee urged the two Koreas to "put down our intentions to threaten each other and begin discussions to end the long-running war". He also proposed discussing ways to halt the advancement of North Korea's nuclear capabilities.
Lee has adopted a conciliatory approach towards Pyongyang, proposing a "multilayered security system" and measures to reduce hostility. North Korea, however, has remained largely unresponsive to Seoul's reconciliation efforts.
