Nord Stream Blasts: Why Is The 2022 Pipeline Sabotage Case Back In Spotlight?

Ukraine has denied involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions and said it is cooperating with the investigation, as Germany's probe into the sabotage moves forward with two Ukrainian suspects in custody=.

"Ukraine has never officially taken part in any operations regarding the blowing up of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told reporters in Kyiv on Sunday. As per Reuters, He said that Ukraine was cooperating with the investigation.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carried Russian gas towards Germany beneath the Baltic Sea, were damaged in a series of explosions in September 2022.

Why The Case Is Back

Germany's investigation has gained fresh momentum with arrests and an indictment of Ukrainian nationals accused of involvement in the sabotage operation.

Earlier last week, Croatia arrested Vladimir Z, a Ukrainian national wanted by Germany under a European arrest warrant. German prosecutors allege he was a trained scuba diver and part of a team that planted explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. He is due to be brought before a German investigating judge following extradition.

Germany had earlier indicted another Ukrainian national, identified as Serhii K, over his alleged role in coordinating the sabotage team.

According to German arrest-warrant documents and a December 2025 detention ruling, prosecutors allege that Serhii K helped coordinate a group that used the sailing yacht Andromeda to place explosives near Denmark's Bornholm island. The alleged team included a coordinator, skipper, four deep-sea divers and an explosives specialist. Serhii K, who was allegedly an officer in a Ukrainian special forces unit at the time, denies involvement.

What Happened In 2022?

The September 2022 explosions damaged both Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea, cutting off major infrastructure built to carry Russian gas to Europe.

Germany's investigation has focused on the alleged use of the Andromeda and a team of divers to plant explosives near Bornholm. German prosecutors have accused Serhii K of acting as the alleged team leader and coordinator.

The blasts occurred months after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and at a time when Europe's energy relationship with Moscow had already been severely disrupted. The damaged pipelines have remained inoperable.

Why Ukraine's Denial Matters

Kyiv has consistently denied involvement in the sabotage. Zelenskiy's latest comments come as Germany's case increasingly focuses on Ukrainian nationals as two Ukrainian suspects are currently in custody, while Germany's investigation continues.

The allegations could have wider political implications given Ukraine's close security relationship with Germany. Ukraine's denial could also create tensions in its relationship with one of its most important European military supporters.

The case remains unresolved, and the latest arrests and indictment establish allegations against individuals, not a final finding on who ordered or carried out the Nord Stream sabotage.
