Summary
  • Imran Khan was taken to PIMS for a medical examination and returned to Adiala jail at 5 am.

  • His sister Uzma Khan alleged that he told her he had been “tortured repeatedly” in prison.

  • PTI accused authorities of defying the Supreme Court order to take Khan to Shifa International Hospital.

Imran Khan was returned to Adiala jail within hours of being taken to a state-run hospital for a medical examination, after authorities instead took the former Pakistan prime minister to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), rather than the private facility named in a Supreme Court order. His sister, who was present during the examination, later claimed Khan told her he had been “tortured repeatedly” in prison.

Khan was examined at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad before being transferred back to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi at 5 am. His sister, Uzma Khan, said he appeared stable and fit but had a patch over one eye.

According to Indian Express, the Supreme Court had on Tuesday directed authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days and allow him access to a medical panel that included his personal physician. Khan was instead examined at PIMS.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the hospital was changed because of a “security situation created by PTI workers” along the planned route. He said a team comprising an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician conducted a detailed examination and declared Khan medically fit.

The government had challenged the Supreme Court order. However, according to Indian Express, its review petition was returned by the court registrar over incomplete paperwork.

PTI has accused authorities of violating the Supreme Court’s order by changing the hospital and not allowing Khan access to his personal physician. The party said it would file a contempt petition.

“This is contempt of the judges. This is contempt of the Supreme Court,” Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi told reporters.

Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, also alleged that he had complained of repeated torture in prison. There was no immediate response from Pakistan’s interior and law ministries or jail authorities to Reuters’ request for comment on the allegation.

According to Indian Express, Khan’s lawyers have said his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has lost significant vision in his right eye. The government has said medical reports showed no condition requiring immediate treatment.

Khan has been in prison since August 2023. He has said the cases against him are politically motivated, an allegation the government denies.
